PATRICKSWELL GAA CLUB NOTES

CLUB SOCIAL NIGHT: The Club hosted a very successful and memorable Social Night to recognise the great achievements of the 1973 and 2018 All-Ireland medal winners – Richard Bennis, Phil Bennis, Frankie Nolan, Sean Foley, Cian Lynch, Diarmaid Byrnes and Aaron Gillane. It was poignant to see two generations of MacCarthy Cup winners on the same stage. The Club Person of the Year 2018 was awarded to Brendan Cawley for his decades of trojan work and unwavering support for Patrickswell GAA Club. Martin Ryan received a Distinguished Service Award for his long service to the club. Our Junior A hurlers also received medals for their three titles in 2018.

SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers made a winning start to the All County Hurling League after a high-scoring and narrow victory against Ahane. Patrickswell dominated the opening fifteen minutes and built a 0-6 to 0-2 lead with points from five different players. Ahane edged themselves back into the contest and began to match the ‘Well point-for-point. Four points from Ahane were countered by four points from Patrickswell via Jack Kelleher (0-2), Jason Gillane and Darragh Ahern. The scoreline after twenty minutes was 0-10 to 0-6. The teams continued to score freely as Patrickswell approached half-time with a 0-13 to 0-10 lead. However, Ahane scored a speculative equalising goal from long range in the closing stages. Both teams traded points and reached the interval level at 0-14 to 1-11.

The second half was barely two minutes old when Calvin Carroll scored Patrickswell’s first goal to open up a 1-14 to 1-12 lead. Ahane responded with a flurry of points to draw level at 1-16 apiece on forty minutes. Jason Gillane and Andrew Carroll notched points to build a two-point advantage, but Ahane restored parity almost immediately. The middle of the second half was keenly fought as the teams continued to be inseparable. As the match entered the final ten minutes, the scoreline was 1-21 apiece. The game seemed to turn in Patrickswell’s favour when Kevin O’Brien’s shot rattled the crossbar and dropped kindly for Darragh Ahern to hit an empty net. To their credit, Ahane raced upfield and equalised with a close-range goal. The spectators were looking forward to an exciting climax to the match. The ‘Well were able to outscore Ahane in the last five minutes and won by 2-25 to 2-23. The next scheduled fixture is on Saturday May 11 away to Ballybrown at 7pm.

MINOR HURLERS: The Minor hurlers produced a superb display to beat a strong Doon team by 2-14 to 1-15 in the Premier Hurling Championship. The competition now closes down until late June for the State Examinations.
