PALLASGREEN GAA CLUB NOTES.
LOCAL OLYMPIAN CENTENARY GOLD MEDAL CELEBRATED: A wonderful crowd turned out to watch John Kiely and Brian O’Grady unveil a plaque to honour the centenary gold medal victory by Paddy Ryan in the 1920 Antwerp Olympic games last Saturday evening in Old Pallas. Paddy Ryan’s feats are well documented but his Olympic Gold and World Record are the highlight of his distinguished career. In 2014 he was given the rare honour of being inducted into the famous United States of America Track and Field (USATF) Hall of Fame. Paddy Ryan was one of five to be inducted for 2014 and joins the likes of Michael Johnson, Carl Lewis and Jesse Owens in the USATF Hall of Fame. MC Susie O’Kelly got proceedings underway at 5.30pm and guest speakers included Cllr Martin Ryan, Minister Of State Niall Collins, Michael Ryan Chairman of Pallasgreen-Templebraden Community Council, Peter Weatherhead on behalf of the Ryan family, John Kiely, Craftsman Eric O’Neill. Also in attendance were Paddy Ryan’s three daughters Bernie O’Dwyer, Catherine O’Geady and Mary Weatherhead, his remaining two daughters Josephine Killian and Christine Donovan reside in New York and London respectively. Following the unveiling refreshments were served in the newly renovated Community Centre.
