U14 Hurling

Easter Sunday morning our under 14 Hurling Team played Ballybrown in the County Feile Semi Final. After a slow start, we found ourselves down 1-2 to no score after five minutes. However, Barry Callinan and Owen Meany got us back into the game with some stylish free taking to leave Bruff in front by one point at half time. Michael O’ Riordan set the tone in the second half and scored two quick points with some good play leading up to the scores from Charlie Cronin and Jack Fitzgerald. Again Owen Meany was unerring from frees. It was nip and tuck until the last few minutes with Bruff eventually winning 13 points to Ballybrown 1-5. There was an hour break before the final. We played our near neighbours Knockainey/ Hospital in the Final. After a frantic start with both sides hitting the crossbars, we settled down and Barry Callinan found the onion bag with a sweet lob and Tommy Rourke with a great point from his left. Michael O’ Riordan leading by example turned his man and found the roof of the net to leave the half time score Bruff 2-2 Knockainey/Hospital 1-1. An emotional Brendan Meany said at half time “We can’t lose this, otherwise I’ll have to move out!”. The second half was played in a whirlwind fashion. Paudie Hennessy made a pass to Michael O’ Riordan raising the roof of the stand with a sublime finish to the back of the net. This was quickly followed by a Donnacha O’ Rahilly point that DJ Carey would have been proud of. Knockainey/Hospital kept pressing and never gave up but our backs were able to stand the pressure and found Jack Hogan in sublime form in goals as he brought off saves that Nicky Quaid would be proud of. There were joyous scenes when the referee blew his whistle. Five months of hard work all paying off. Michael O’ Riordan raised the county cup. He thanked the county board and Rathkeale for the facilities, the referee, all the players for their efforts last few months, parents for taking them to training and matches, management and Knockainey/ Hospital for a great sporting match. We now head to the all Ireland Feile to represent Limerick, a huge honor for the club. Special mention to Jack Boddy who sustained a nasty hand injury, speedy recovery Jack. The Bruff panel is Jack Hogan, Jack Boddy, Kieran O’ Shea, Ben Noonan, Adam Cusack, Sean Casey, Tadhg Boddy, Ethan Cumes, Barry Callinan, Tommy O’ Rourke, Michael O’ Riordan(captain), Jack O’Neill, Charlie Cronin, Owen Meany, Donnacha O’ Rahilly, Paudie Hennessy, Jack Fitzgerald, Ben Gunning, Conor Clancy, James O’ Connor, Mark Purtill, Cathal Garvey. Management Team: Brendan Meany, Mossy Boddy, Eamon Cronin, Roger Mulqueen, John Hennessy, Jason Hayes(S&C coach) and Karen Hennessy (First Aid). Also thank you to Fr Daly who said prayers at mass for team and even sent Holy Water to Rathkeale.
