Round Up Thursday’s Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup Matches:
Thursday 18th January
Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup
University of Galway 3-19 SETU Carlow 2-12
SETU Waterford 1-18 DCU Dóchas Éireann 0-13
Charlie Mitchell shone for University of Galway as they got their Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup off to an impressive start with a 10-point win over SETU Carlow.
The Offaly hurler, who was the only non-Galway native on the team, scored 2-1 from play including a spectacular goal in the first half when he soloed through the heart of the SETU Waterford defence and then finished with aplomb.
A comfortable win for the visitors didn’t look on the cards when Tomás Keyes hit an early goal for SETU Waterford that helped them in to a 1-4 to 0-6 lead after 19 minutes.
But a purple patch either side of half-time that saw University of Galway score 1-9 without reply and move 1-15 to 1-4 ahead ultimately settled the tie.
Credit to SETU Carlow, they kept battling and reduced the gap to seven points, but the game was done and dusted when Mitchell set up Colm Molly for University of Galway’s second goal.
In tonight’s other match, a strong second-half from SETU Waterford saw them eventually chisel out an eight point win over DCU Dóchas Éireann.
After a tight first half there were just three points between the teams, but SETU Waterford moved up a couple of gears in the second-half to win comfortably enough in the end.
