PATRICKSWELL

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell bowed out of the Senior Hurling Championship after a defeat to South Liberties in the quarter-final. South Liberties were two points ahead after five minutes, but Patrickswell took charge with six consecutive points in fifteen minutes (Josh Considine, Diarmaid Byrnes, Aaron Gillane, Jack Kelleher 0-2 and Tom O’Brien). However, Patrickswell failed to score in the next ten minutes while South Liberties notched two points. Thankfully Aaron Gillane and Seanie O’Brien added two further points before South Liberties secured the last point of the first half. The interval score was 0-8 to 0-5.
South Liberties struck the first point of the second half, although Aaron Gillane responded within minutes. Two more points from our opponents put them slightly behind at 0-9 to 0-8 in the 38th minute. While Kevin O’Brien increased the buffer to two points, South Liberties delivered a devastating blow with a well-taken goal in the 45th minute. The Patrickswell lean spell of twelve minutes ended when Diarmaid Byrnes equalised at 0-11 to 1-8 in the 50th minute. Over the course of the next ten minutes, South Liberties outscored the ‘Well by two points to establish a 1-11 to 0-12 lead. There were nine additional minutes of injury time and the tension was high. Diarmaid Byrnes’ point was cancelled out by South Liberties, then Aaron Gillane reduced the deficit to a single point. However, South Liberties were unfazed and scored another point to win the match 1-13 to 0-14.
JUNIOR A HURLERS: There were dramatic scenes in the County quarter-final as Patrickswell snatched an unbelievable late win against a distraught Doon team. Patrickswell led by 0-3 to 0-1 in the tenth minute (Eoin Harmon, Jamie Dillon and Gavin Carey), but Doon plundered a goal and four points without reply in twelve minutes. The pendulum swung back to Patrickswell with a salvo of four points in five minutes (Eoin Harmon, Adam Carrig and Cian Enright 0-2). However Doon added two more points. At half-time, the East Men led by 1-7 to 0-7.
Eoin Harmon’s brace of points slashed the arrears to a single score, but the ‘Well failed to score for fifteen minutes as Doon turned the screw with a second goal and two points. By the 50th minute, Patrickswell were 2-9 to 0-9 behind. The next ten minutes were low scoring and Patrickswell reached injury time significantly adrift at 2-10 to 0-11. Patrickswell threw caution to the wind and played short balls into the forward line. Pa Mann hit the net from ten yards out in the 62nd minute to set up a grandstand finale. In the 66th minute, a 65’ was lofted into the night sky. Josh Carey leapt higher than the Doon defence and swept the sliotar beautifully into the Doon goal from a height. Our opponents were shattered, but there was still a minute to play. Patrickswell held out and recorded a famous escape.
