On this date, 16th June 1996, Pairc na nGael Limerick witnessed a hectic Munster Senior Hurling Championship encounter where Limerick hosted the Munster and All Ireland Senior Hurling Champions Clare in the Semi Final of Munster Senior Hurling Championship.

Limerick defeated Cork in Pairc Ui Caoimh on 26th. May in the opening Round where they scored a 3.18 to 0.08 win to qualify for a Semi Final place with Clare.

The game was close all through, Limerick led at the interval by 1.05 to 0.07, compliments of a Gary Kirby goal with 4 minutes remaining in the opening half, after the sides were level at that stage when TJ Ryan had equalised three minutes before Kirby hit the net for the only goal of the game, Clare added two points before the interval break

The second half was also intense and Clare looked on course for victory leading by three points 0.15 to 1.09 with five minutes remaining, up stepped substitute Barry Foley to reduce the deficit to two points, Gary Kirby with a point from play, left the minimum between the sides with tow minutes remaining, one minute later, Barry Foley scored the equaliser to set up a grand stand finish. Ciaran Carey won possession at midfield and he ran at Clare defence resulting in he scoring a sensational winning point after a titanic struggle, giving Limerick a 0.16 Clare 1.12 win and a place in Munster Final for the third year in a row.
