RESULTS:
JUNIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Group 4 Round 5 – Kilteely Dromkeen 2.15 – 1.16 Tournafulla
Kilteely Dromkeen 2.15 – 1.16 Tournafulla
Against all the odds the lads have only gone and done it 🙌🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
A titantic battle today in Martinstown vs Tournafulla saw us come from behind to secure a famous and hard earned victory to progress to a first county 1/4 final since 2014.
Needing a 10 point win or any win and results elsewhere to go our way to progress we faced an uphill task.
In perfect autumn conditions, the huge intensity in the middle third made scores hard to come by. Tournafulla (who were hurling intermediate the past few seasons) slotted their frees and built up a 6-2 lead approaching 20 mins. Some fine scores from Denny Ahern and Denis O’Dea helped make up the gap but it was a well worked team goal, emphatically finished by David Hannon that got us right back in the game. Unfortunately, a red card for KD against the run of play had us under pressure again but credit to team and management, we quickly re-organized and finished the half the stronger to leave 2 points between the sides (Tour 0.9 – KD 1.4).
Losing a man, should mathematically greatly add to the challenge but thanks to a hugely disciplined and hard working performance we were still able to keep Tournafulla within touching distance. With more direct running , the frees came and Denny Ahern gave an exhibition of score taking. Huge work rate from our half forwards and midfield saw us win ball back and convert into points on the board. Christy O’Dea and. Denis O’Dea taking some fantastic scores. All the while our backs were staying on top for the most part and cleaning up the breaking ball. A half backline of Danny Holton, flanked by James Dalaigh and the recently repatriated John Ahern formed a formidable barrier. Long balls into the full forward line were well snuffed out by the full backline of Fionn Murphy, Shane O’Grady and James O’Regan who were well marshalled by Pearse Close in goals.
Halfway through the half, a lunge bursting run saw Sean O’Dea bearing down on goal. Unlucky to have been abruptly stopped under a heavy tackle the ball broke loose and Tour’ went up the field and made use of their extra man to bury a goal and put them back in front against the run of play.
This group of players are well used to 6 pint swings going against us and the misfortune that comes after that but today was different. By sheer work ethic and belief which was constant from the sideline to each man in red white and green we worked our way back into contention. Great driving runs from Keelan, Danny and Robbie gave us great forward momentum.
3 points down with 3 minutes left, an excellent low ball in found a fleet footed David Hannon who turned his man and buried to the bottom corner of the net.
Fist pumps filled the air as all from KD rose to the occasion.
We were now level when news of the Bouncers leading Old Christians filtered through. If that became a result we would be going through on head to head if we could just get the win. This news spurned on a skillful Tournafulla outfit who enjoyed plenty of possession . However that huge work rate from all prevented them getting their scores and some clever link up play saw us take the lead through superb scores from Denis O’Dea on the right and David Hannon on the left in quick succession. Fantastic impact from the bench helped us close out the game with some clever play in the corners. The final whistle finally came and was greeted by a unique mixture of delight, relief and uncertainty. With the data coverage of Martinstown coming under unprecedented pressure, good news finally filtred through. A win for Garryspillane in Hospital saw us go through on account of head to head into a county 1/4 final at long last.
Huge well done to all players, management team and supporters.
Despite the small gathering the atmosphere generated by all was immense and crucial in helping us come from behind. Hard luck to Tournafulla. If any team knows how you feel, we do after missing out on points difference in 2020 to the eventual county finalists and also on tight margins last year.
An exciting couple of weeks lies ahead now with a final group game in Football next weekend and county 1/4 in hurling. On Monday the U15s are in a Football shield 1/4 final action while the U13s are in their hurling Final Thursday evening in Knocklong. Best of luck to all and let’s keep getting behind these lads.
The roads from Cork, Tralee, Dublin and Dingle have been well traveled by our adult players all year and many are balancing raising their young families. It’s fantastic to see them and their families get rewarded today.
Cill tSíle Dromcaoin Abú.
