GALBALLY GAA CLUB NOTES

The Galbally Footballers returned to action at Senior Championship Level for the first time since the relegation playoff against Pallasgreen in Bruff in 2014. Oola were our opponents, in a game that was competitive for long spells, particularly in the first half. However an experienced Oola side showed tremendous pace and finishing power to score four second half goals, leading to a 5-7 to 0-12 win. The second round against Na Piarsaigh takes place on this coming Sunday at 6pm in Bruff. The team was Ger Ryan, Tom Davern, Roibeard Donovan, Frank Cussen, Dave Cussen, John Kearns, Cathal Shanahan, Mike Donovan (0-2), James Ryan (0-1), Mark Quinlan (0-1), James Cummins (0-1), Colin Ryan, Jamie Morrissey, Kieran Hickey (0-5), Gary McCarthy. Subs: Jacko Mullane (0-1), Jack Donovan (0-1), Eoin Halligan, Pa O’Donnell, Kevin Denihan, Nathan O’Byrne, Michael O’Dwyer, Jonathan Scully, Billy Donoghue.

The Under 14 team played in the Feile Peil against Monaleen and Kildimo Pallaskenry and were beaten in both games. The squad was Billy O’Keeffe, Dylan Moriarty, Jack Gallagher, James O’Sullivan, Bailey Ryan, Mikey O’Keeffe, David O’Mullane, Jason O’Mahoney, James Ryan, Evan O’Connor, Shane Ryan, Phillip Ryan, Jamie McGrath, Declan Heavey, Paul McGrath, Hugh Flanagan, Tiernan Ryan, Billy Kiely, Evan Sheedy. Shane Ryan injured his hand in the first game and we wish him a speedy recovery

It was ironic that both Limerick hurlers and Mayo Footballers won League Titles at Croke Park last Sunday, as the fortunes of both counties have intertwined so much throughout the course of GAA history, primarily in terms of defeat. However in the 1930s, Limerick hurlers and Mayo footballers were the League Champions together for five years in a row. John Kiely stood on the Town End terrace for the National League Final in Ennis back in 1997 driven to the match by none other than Tom Casey. Leading Limerick to the 2019 League Title completes a healthy set of silverware. He acted as a selector with John Allen when Limerick won the 2013 Munster Title. He has won the All Ireland Hurling Title, The National League Title and the Munster League as Limerick Senior Manager, while he has also led the Limerick Under 21s to Munster and All Ireland Glory. He will be fondly remembered among Limerick hurling supporters for many years to come. Well done to Kieran Hickey and Seanie O Donnell on their roles in the backroom team.

The Con and Annie Kirby stake continued last Saturday night with the Galbally GAA nominated dog ‘Argentina’ qualifying for the next round at Limerick Greyhound Stadium. Please go along to support the Galbally nominated dog. The Galbally Camogie dog, Toolmaker Jose has also qualified. This is a competition that has been kind to us in the past and we sincerely thank JP and Noreen McManus for their generosity in supporting the event. The latest Split the Pot winner was Billy Bourke who was the lucky winner of €373. Next Draw in the Foxes Den Knockcarron on Saturday night next 6thApril. We would sincerely like to thank all the local people for supporting this venture.
