County Junior A Semi-Final
Fr. Caseys 2-09, Croom 2-07
Fr. Caseys Junior A Footballers are heading to the county final after a dramatic finish last Saturday in Mick Neville Park when Kevin O’Connor stole the show to snatch a last gasp goal in the dying moments to deny a spirited Croom side.
Fr. Caseys made a blistering start are were 1-03 to 0-01 in front after 10 minutes. A pointed free from Jamie O’Connor opened the scoring but this was soon cancelled out by Croom. Jamie O’Connor then added a point from play before team captain Pa O’Connor breached the defence and made no mistake to slot to the back of the net. When Billy Quirke raised another white flag the Abbeyfeale men were looking comfortable with their 5 point lead. Over the next 10 minutes Croom found their feet however and with a goal of their own the scores were soon level. Well taken points from Jamie O’Connor and Morgan Scannell either side of a Croom point left Fr. Caseys with a single point half time lead. The score at the interval was Fr. Caseys 1-05, Croom 1-04.
A pointed free from Jamie O’Connor opened the second half scoring but three points without reply would give Croom the lead as the teams headed into the final quarter. A point from the newly introduced Martin Coughlan and two converted frees from Jamie O’Connor, one from long distance had Fr. Caseys back in front but a second Croom goal against the run of play had the score 1-09 to 2-07 with 10 minutes remaining. Croom now entered a strong phase of keeping possession but they never managed to extend their single point advantage and more importantly Fr. Caseys never gave up trying. Deep in injury time, Kevin O’Connor showed all his experience to dispossess the Croom Keeper and tap the ball to the net to the delight of the sizeable Fr. Caseys crowd. There would be no more time on the clock and Fr. Caseys had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 2-09 to 2-07.
Despite the heroic finish, Fr. Caseys produced a very impressive display from 1 to 15 plus all those introduced and were fully deserved of their victory. Failure to score more when in dominance nearly cost the team but their never say die attitude won the day. They will now face local rivals Newcastle West on Sunday October 31st as they bid to claim the County Junior A crown for the first time since 2007.
