West Senior League
Fr. Caseys 0-13 Adare 1-06
Last Tuesday evening in Abbeyfeale, Fr. Caseys faced Adare in a top of the table clash. Both sides lined out without their county senior and u20 representatives due to upcoming Munster fixtures. Fr. Caseys started the brightest with a fisted point from Rory O’Brien followed by a point from play by Jamie O’Connor. Adare levelled proceedings before the first water break and then emerged the stronger to rattle the net on 18 minutes to take the lead. A well taken point by DJ Stack kept Fr. Caseys in touch but Adare would then kick two unanswered points to take a four point lead. A point from Daniel Daly before half time reduced the margin to one goal. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-04. Adare 1-04.
The twenty minutes after the restart totally belonged to Fr. Caseys as they found an extra gear and kicked six points without reply to turn a three point deficit into a three point advantage. A point from Rory O’Brien was soon followed by a pointed free from Jamie O’Connor. Next up on the scoreboard was captain Chris Smith with a point to level. Chris along with Rory and Daniel were full of energy throughout the night and caused Adare plenty of headaches with their running game. A pointed free from the ever reliable Jamie O’Connor was then followed by a fine point from the evergreen David Ward. Another Rory O’Brien point extended the lead to three points before Adare finally opened their second half account. Any notion of a comeback was dispelled with two pointed frees from Rory O’Brien and another Daniel Daly point. Adare claimed the final point of the night but when the final whistle went it was Fr. Caseys in command with a 0-13 to 1-06 winning margin.
This was a very positive performance from Fr. Caseys who earned a deserved victory over strong opponents. Achieving this victory without five county representatives shows the strength in the panel. The opening period of the second half was particularly impressive and although there are areas of improvement the team are on a good momentum ahead of championship.
West Intermediate League
Fr. Caseys 0-08 Cappagh 2-06
Following on from the Senior victory on Tuesday, our Junior A Footballers were looking for a repeat result against Cappagh on Wednesday night in Abbeyfeale. It was Cappagh first out of the blocks with a goal inside the opening ten minutes. Before the first water break the sides exchanged points with Eoghan O’Connell on target for Fr. Caseys. Over the next ten minutes Cappagh would kick 1-02 without reply to stretch their lead to eight points. Needing a response before the break, up stepped Eoghan O’Connell with two points to reduce the margin to six at the break. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-03, Cappagh 2-03.
While Cappagh kicked the first two points of the second half, Fr. Caseys finally found their groove and points from Pa O’Connor and Seamus Lenihan along with a brace of pointed frees from Jamie
O’Connor had the deficit back to four points at the final water break. A point from Jamie O’Connor reduced the margin further but Cappagh soon restored their four point gain as we entered the final five minutes. Although Fr. Caseys continue to push for a lifeline in the closing stages there would be no more score as Cappagh held on to win. The final score was Fr. Caseys 0-08, Cappagh 2-06.
The final score did not do Fr. Caseys justice and if they had been more clinical in the final third this result could have been difference. Hopefully this can be resolved in their final group game away to Glin and then the subsequent championship opener against Newcastle West.
2021 County Championship Draws
The draws for the 2021 county championship campaigns took place last Tuesday night with Fr. Caseys Senior and Junior A team both emerging in Group 4 in their respective grades. In both competitions there will be four groups of three teams, with the top two teams qualifying for the county quarter-finals and the bottom teams entering a relegation semi-finals.
In the Senior draw Fr. Caseys have a potentially difficult group paired against our in-form neighbours Newcastle West and last year’s beaten semi-finalist Galbally. All the teams in this group will have high aspirations and we expect some nail biting encounters before this group is settled. Galbally and Newcastle West will meet in the opening game of this group with the loser facing Fr. Caseys in round 2. Fr. Caseys will then face the winner of Round 1 in the final round of games. The dates for the various rounds of the senior and junior championships will be released after the next CCC meeting.
In the Junior A draw Fr. Caseys have been paired with Newcastle West and Hospital/Herbertstown. Fr. Caseys will play Newcastle West in round 1 of the group with the loser of this game playing Hospital/Herbertstown in round 2 and the winner playing in round 3.
Good Luck Limerick
Best of luck to the Limerick Senior Footballers who take on Cork in the Munster Semi-Final this Saturday July 10th in the Gaelic Grounds at 3pm. Caseys are proud to be represented by Adrian Enright and Cormac Roche on this panel.
We also wish the best of luck to the Limerick U20 Footballers who take on Tipperary this Thursday July 8th in Semple Stadium in the Quarter Final of the Munster U20 Championship. Fr. Caseys are proud to be represented by Dylan Quirke, Sean Kilbridge and Eliah on this panel.
