FR CASEYS GAA

Minor County Final
Fr. Caseys 3-13 Monaleen 1-09
Fr. Caseys Minor Footballers travelled to Mick Neville Park last Saturday morning bidding to win a historical five in a row of County Minor titles but knew they would face a fierce battle against a very strong and skilful Monaleen side. Despite a disastrous start where Monaleen took the lead with a goal in the opening two minutes, Fr. Caseys through captain Michael Kilbridge made the perfect reply with a goal of their own on four minutes. Points from Aryn and Cian put Fr. Caseys in front but three points without reply had Monaleen back in the lead after the first quarter. Points from Ayrn, Michael, Adam and Calum would however give the Abbeyfeale men a three-point advantage with half time nearing. Monaleen managed to pull one back but when the half time whistle went it was Fr. Caseys in a deserved 1-06 to 1-04 lead after an early scare.
A pointed free from Cian and another point from play from Aryn stretched our lead to four early in the second half. This however would be our final scores of the half as Monaleen gained dominance in the final quarter to drag themselves back into the game, kicking four points without reply, two in stoppage time to level the scores at the death and force the game to extra time.
Having victory snatched, the extra time period would now test our resolve but thankfully these boys were up to the challenge. Also the unloading of our bench and the added strength that brought gave Fr. Caseys a new lease of life. Points from Liam O’Connor, Michael Kilbridge and Cian Harnett put us back in front before Monaleen replied with one. Then came our second goal of the game from Liam O’Connor and this dealt a major blow to the Monaleen team, one of which they never recovered from. Leading by five points at the break, Fr. Caseys resumed with points from Ronan O’Connell and Calum Boyle before Adam Murphy sealed the win with our third goal putting ten points between the teams. There was no doubt when the final whistle went and Fr. Caseys had captured the Minor Football title for a fifth time in a row. Well done to all involved that gave a super effort all year and to the management team of JD Foley, Norman Finn, Pat Doody, John Boyle and Mike O’Shea. Long may this successful run continue, it is a credit to our bord na nog club under the stewardship of John Crowley and hopefully someday soon this success will transition once more to our adult teams.
