Senior West League Semi-Final
Fr. Caseys 1-05 Newcastle West 2-10
Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers made the short trip to Tournafulla last Wednesday evening to take on local rivals Newcastle West in the West League Semi-Final. Entering the game on the back of a 100% record in the league phase, the Abbeyfeale men had an air of confidence and for the opening quarter Fr. Caseys looked the dominant force. Two early points from play from Cormac Roche and then Rory O’Brien gave an early lead but unfortunately this was not expanded. Too many wides from Fr. Caseys was punished by Newcastle West who opened their account after 13 minutes with a pointed free and then proceeded to kick another 1-03 without reply to turn this game on its head. From commanding territory and possession, Fr. Caseys were now on the backfoot and struggling to deal with the crowded Newcastle West defence and quick counter attacks. Fr. Caseys were awarded a life line just before half time after being awarded a penalty but failed to capitalise with the keeper saving. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-02, Newcastle West 1-04.
Both sides traded points early in the second half with Martin Scannell on target for Fr. Caseys. A long range free was expertly converted by Cormac Roche but Newcastle West replied with three further points to stretch the margin to seven points. A goal from Rory O’Brien gave hope of an unlikely comeback with over ten minutes remaining but Newcastle West again replied with 1-01 to extend their lead to eight points. Inside the closing stages the teams traded points with David Ward converting for Fr. Caseys. After an impressive opening quarter where the biggest complaint was the wide total, we slowly lost command in this game and struggled to deal with a more clinical Newcastle West team. The team now have five weeks before the championship starts to dust themselves down and be ready for Oola in their opening game. Newcastle West are the benchmark at present for football within the county and hopefully this lesson learnt will be reversed later in the year. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 1-05, Newcastle West 2-10
Intermediate West League Semi-Final
Fr. Caseys 0-10 Feenagh/Kilmeedy 1-10
Fr. Caseys Intermediate Footballers travelled to Newcastle West on Monday May 23rd to take on Feenagh/Kilmeedy in the West League Semi-Final. It was a battle of the two county champions, Fr. Caseys crowned Junior A Premier winners in 2021 while Feenagh winning the County Junior A title. After a very positive league campaign where maximum points were captured, Fr. Caseys entered the game full of confidence and wearing the favourites tag. That swagger was soon rattled after a superb first half from their opponents who adopted a defensive structure which Fr. Caseys found hard to break. At the other end Feenagh were also the more clinical in front of goal and took a 1-06 to 0-05 advantage at half time.
Fr. Caseys needed a positive start to the second period but two points inside the next 10 minutes were matched by their opponents. Feenagh had stretched their lead to 1-10 to 0-08 with just 10 minutes remaining before Fr. Caseys staged a late rally. Adding two further points to the scoreboard the deficit was reduced to just one goal as we entered the final stages. For once this team were unable to produce the needed magic. Feenagh/Kilmeedy would hold on to record a 1-10 to 0-10 victory which ends the West League campaign for our Intermediates. There has been many positives to take from this league and maybe this first defeat will serve as a positive to refocus the troops ahead of the County Championship in 6 weeks.
