Senior County Championship
Fr. Caseys 0-15 Monaleen 0-08
Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers travelled to Mick Neville Park last Thursday night to take on Monaleen in round 3 of the county championship. With both teams having aspirations of reaching the knockout stages this was always going to be a difficult challenge. With maximum points from their first two starts, Fr. Caseys also knew that victory would leave them in a very strong position in terms of group qualification.
The opening quarter was an extremely close affair with the teams trading points on three occasions, Rory O’Brien with two fine points from play coming either side of a Martin Scannell free. Fr. Caseys playing with the strong breeze had looked the most dangerous side but were also guilty of too many fouls in the final third leading to kickable frees for their opponents. A commanding second quarter saw Fr. Caseys outscoring their opponents five points to one with points coming from Rory, Adrian, Cormac, Dylan and Cathal. The pick of those scores was a glorious 45-metre kick from Cormac Roche that dissected the posts. Just before the break Monaleen had a great opportunity for goal but credit to Shane O’Connell who stood firm and protected the four point lead. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-08, Monaleen 0-04.
The biggest worry at half time was would the four point lead be enough against the strong breeze but an early Martin Scanell free followed by points from Adrian Enright and Chris Smith showed that Fr. Caseys were up for the battle. Monaleen kept in touch with a brace of points but a Sean Kilbridge point and another Martin Scanell free had seven points between the sides as we entered the final ten minutes. Monaleen now had to throw everything forward but credit to the Fr. Caseys defence who stood firm, Robert Browne just one of many players with crucial tackles to hamper any hopes of a comeback. When the newly introduced John Riordan added another point to the scoreboard the contest was all but over. We had time for another two Monaleen points and a soccer style point from Chris Smith to leave seven points between the teams when the final whistle went. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 0-15, Monaleen 0-08
This was commanding victory from Fr. Caseys against a proven force in Limerick Football. Well done to both players and management on the results to date and with a quarter final place now almost guaranteed some may dream of an automatic semi-final spot at the expense of Newcastle West. Within the team however they will not see past round 4 and a tough encounter against Galbally who are also challenging for the knockout places. History will tell us not to write off Galbally and we expect another exciting challenge on Thursday evening in Kilmallock. Best of luck to all involved
Intermediate County Championship
Fr. Caseys 0-10 Gerald Griffins 4-16
Fr. Caseys Intermediate Footballers travelled to Newcastle West last Friday night, hoping to claim their first league points and resurrect their championship campaign but they would face a daunting challenge against a very strong Gerald Griffins side. The loss of Diarmuid Buckley and Cathal Broderick to the Senior team the day previous would only add to this tough assignment.
Gerald Griffins started in blistering fashion with 1-05 registered before Fr. Caseys kicked their opening point on nine minutes. Another point soon followed from the Abbeyfeale men but 2-04 without reply in a twelve minute spell put Gerald Griffins into a very commanding sixteen point lead.
Fr. Caseys kicked their third point of the evening but once more Gerald Griffins delivered a hammer blow with another point and then their fourth goal. The last point of the half went to Fr. Caseys to leave the score at the break, Fr. Caseys 0-04, Gerald Griffins 4-10.
Credit to the Fr. Caseys team who produced a much better second half performance matching their opponents with six points added on both sides. Unfortunately the damage was done in the opening half and in the end it was a heavy defeat that hopefully this young side will soon forget and move onto the next challenge. On Saturday they will face Pallasgreen who are also without a championship win. Hopefully the potential this team showed in the opening round can be found again and while qualifying for the knockout stages is no longer a possibility they will be keen to avoid bottom place in the group. We wish all involved the best of luck.
