Championship Football Returns
It has been a long wait but the 2022 Limerick Club Football Championship starts this weekend with games pending in both Senior & Intermediate divisions. Fr. Caseys wait for a Senior County Title goes back to 2006 but after tasting success at Junior A, U21 and Minor level last year the club will be hoping our Seniors can challenge for the highest honours once more. We need to go back to 1993 when the Club last won the Intermediate County Title and the club have maintained a team at Senior grade ever since. Having our second team competing at this grade is a great honour but the players involved are adamant they are not there to make up the numbers.
On Thursday night our Senior Footballers will face Oola in Croagh and will be aiming to get some vital points on the board in what is a very difficult group. Three teams from the group of six will qualify for the knockout stages and Oola who will be led by Josh Ryan in attack will be looking to upset the odds just like they did on many occasions last year. Our Seniors made a flawless start to the West League winning all group games but then stumbled to Newcastle West at the Semi-Final stages. Although that game highlighted that improvements are needed, the team will still enter the championship in confident mood. Adrian Enright emerges from the inter-county setup in top form and he will be aided in attack by team captain Cormac Roche who will be another key driving force. Former county players Daniel Daly, David Ward and Robert Browne will bring plenty of experience and with the youthful potential of Fiachra Cotter, Mark McCarthy, Eliah Riordan and Rory O’Brien to name a few, this team is not short of match winners. We wish the team the very best of luck in what will be a tricky opening tie but one they are more than capable of winning if playing to form.
On Friday night in Tournafulla our Intermediate Footballers will face Drom/Broadford. Returning to Intermediate grade for the first time since 2009 after winning the County Junior A title last year, this opening game will be an ideal gauge on where this youthful side stand in a very challenging division. In Drom/Broadford they face a team with a reputation that proceeds them after two decades of winning county senior titles but having suffered relegation in 2020 and failing to regain promotion last year maybe an opening round shock from Fr. Caseys is not impossible. There is no doubt we enter the game with the underdog tag but having faced many difficult challenges and emerged victorious last season, hopefully there is another chapter to write for this promising side.
The throw in time for both games is 7.30pm. Those attend this weekend’s games are reminded to purchase their entry tickets online in advance. The link for this can be found on the club Facebook page.
