BALLYSTEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
Senior Football
We had a huge win to kick start our 2021 Championship campaign in the Bog Garden on Sunday evening as we beat St Kierans by a point in a thriller. After letting a big lead slip in the third quarter, we ground out a 1-15 to 3-8 win.
David O’Shaughnessy kicked us off with a score from a free but inaccuracy in front of goal let us down as Kierans took the lead with the first goal of the game inside the opening five minutes. To our credit, the boys retained their composure and four on the trot had us 0-5 to 1-1 ahead at the first waterbreak with James O’Meara grabbing the lead score. Shortly after the restart, a long range O’Shaughnessy free dropped into the net to move us four clear. Kierans responded with a point but we hit back with two of our own from Darragh Ranahan and O’Shaughnessy. A Tomas Sheahan 45’ with the final kick off the half had us 1-9 to 1-3 clear.
The first two points of the second half went our way as we moved eight points ahead. Kierans would then hit a purple patch and 2-3 without reply prior to the waterbreak had them one in front heading into the final quarter. But the boys never gave in and three in a row after the restart had us two clear with a minute to play after some heroic defending. Kierans had one final chance but could only muster a score from a free as we held on for a winning start to the season.
We now face Galtee Gaels in the second round knowing a win will assure us of a place in the quarter-finals.
