BALLYBROWN GAA CLUB NOTES

It is with great sadness that all involved in Ballybrown GAA Club learnt of the passing of Peter Carroll this week. We offer offer our sincere condolences to his son Pete, daughter Elaine and extended family, friends, neighbours and Club members.
Peter who could only be considered as nothing less than the backbone of the club. From his playing days right through to his involvement with underage and adult teams, and while doing that also held the responsible positions of Chairman, Secretary and for a generation as Treasurer. Hurling is the favoured sport locally and from an early age Peter loved to play. I’m told that in the mid to late1950s the Red Cross in Patrickswell sponsored a league between Lurriga N.S.Tervoe N.S and Crecora N.S.with matches attracting huge crowds in the field in Patrickswell, and it was said that even then Peter had that touch of class. Peter was part of a star half forward line with Pat Fogarty and Charlie McCarthy and the biggest day in that Ballybrown Junior teams history was the winning of the 1967 Junior County title versus Doon. This match delayed until 1968 would take Ballybrown up Senior for the first time. My own earliest memory of Peter playing was in a match where Peter sustained a bad leg break. I think that was around 1976 or 1977 but I could be corrected. That had a big impact on Peters playing days. Most of Peter’s involvement with the club after that was as a Manager, trainer and club officer. In the mid 1980s the club took on the task of replacing the Pre fab clubhouse with the current structure that we have today. The money was raised and the new club was built and opened in 1987. This new clubhouse had a bar licence and the people who worked in the bar, did so on a voluntary basis. Peter as club treasurer was one of those volunteers. Ballybrown GAA Club was his whole life and even when he couldn’t get to a match, you could expect a call from Peter as to how the match was going. His commitment to the club never waivered and even though his health was not the best over the last seven years, he was still the person that we depended on to make sure our club lotto functioned every Monday night. The ticket bundles were always prepared by Peter for each seller and he kept account of incoming money to the cent. It was only in the last couple of years that Peter had to leave us as his health changed for the worse and he had to take to the care of the management and staff of Thorpes Nursing Home. Outside of the GAA, Peter was a very proud father and grandfather. Both his son Pete and daughter Elaine lived in Cork. Elaine lives near Charleville and almost every weekend Peter would make that journey to see his family in his Red Ford Fiesta until he changed to a silver automatic which I think was a KIA until he stopped driving a couple of years ago. Peter Carroll was an inspiration to all who knew him in sport and in life, and he will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Ar dheis de go raibh a ainm.
