ATHEA GAA CLUB NOTES

It is fair to say that there is not a night that goes by when the Maroon and White is represented in some corner of the county. We are delighted with the progress the club has made over the last few years, with the development of the hurling club, U5 nursery and the further merging of the Ladies Club, Bord na Nóg and Junior Club. The newest committee to be established within the Club is the ‘Healthy Club Team’ who will work towards implementing initiatives to promote a healthy mind and body.
Our U14 boys team returned to Athea on Saturday morning in celebratory fashion winning the title of the 2020 County Champions. Another piece of silverware to add to the cabinet. Well done to all the team and their coaches Colm Hassett, John Hunt and Mike Buckley.
Our Club would like to express our thanks to Ann Marie Horgan who has stepped down as Children’s Officer after 3 years of service. Ann Marie has worked tirelessly behind the scenes organising Garda Vetting, Child Safeguarding, Training etc. Linda Hunt has gladly agreed to take over the role from Ann Marie. Wishing Linda a happy and enjoyable placement with the Club.
U14 Boys
Athea 5-5 Kildimo/Pallaskenery 2-7
Our brilliant team won the delayed 2020 U14, 13 aside County Championship on Saturday morning last in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale. We had a small panel of 16 players, but what we have are good. A great crowd of parents and grandparents turned up to cheer on the boys and they weren’t disappointed. We were under a lot of pressure in the first half against the breeze and were probably lucky to be only 4 points down, (2-4 to 1-3) at the break. Coach Colm Hassett gave them plenty of encouragement at half time and they went out all guns blazing. Straight from the throw in a magnificent catch by Evan Curry, followed by a strong solo run before passing to Rory Cleary who buried a bullet of a shot to the back of the net. We got on top for most of the second half with brilliant displays from Evan Curry, Calum Buckley, Timmy O Keeffe and Sean Twomey. We stretched our lead out to six points, they brought it back to a 3 point game before we surged again to win by six. There was great scenes of Jubilation as Captain Calum Buckley was presented with the cup after the match. A cavalcade of cars made their way to Athea where they made plenty of noise up and down the street, before being treated to refreshments from Collins Shop outside the club house.
Team ; Tomás Ahern, Sean Twomey, Tadhg Ahern, Ciarán Hunt, Calum Buckley, Jamie Collins, Evan Curry, Rory Cleary, Louis O Sullivan, Timmy O Keeffe, Jack Sexton, Alex Quinn, James Hunt, Tomás Ahern, Jim Ahern and Jamie Quinn. Unavailable on the day was Fionn Histon.
This team have a bye in the first round of the 2021 league, so their next game is at home to Knockaderry on Monday July 12th at 7pm.
