Athea GAA Club Notes:
Developments at Páirc na nGael:
The newly drained and seeded training areas received their first cut recently. We look forward to making full use of these areas in the future, taking some traffic off our main pitch. John Brosnan has commenced work in replacing the entrance piers, and tidy up of plasterwork. The main carpark will be tarmacadamed in the coming days, and also a section of the walking track, nearest the pump house will be resurfaced, which will improve this area greatly.
Split the Bucket:
Congratulations to Cathy Collins who was last week’s Split the Bucket winner, going home with €457 which was the largest pot to date, and Cathy’s second time winning! The next draw will take place on Monday October 23rd. Envelopes can be purchased at Brown Joes, Dick Whites, Collins Shop, O’ Riordan’s Pharmacy, Batts , Athea Credit Union, Bingo at Con Colbert Hall on Friday nights, Chinese Takeaway, and during events at Pairc na nGael. Thanks to everyone for your continued support.
RIP Angela
As a club we were so sorry to hear of the very sad passing of Angela Cafferky Leach. Angela was a member of the Healthy Athea committee and it was because of Angela that the good to go was set up first day and such a huge success and so popular with so many people in our parish. As with everything in life Angela brought great fun and enthusiasm to everything she was involved in. We would like to offer our sincere sympathies to Angela’s husband Michael, her son Connor, and all the Cafferky and Leach families at this very sad time, she will be greatly missed. Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam.

In the final they narrowly lost to the hosts St Senans after a great team performance. Many thanks to St. Senans for hosting a lovely morning as a fundraiser for the hope foundation.

U17 Boys
Division 2 County Quarter Final
Griffins/Glin/Athea 2-06 Na Piarsaigh 2-12
This game was played in Athea and unfortunately we came out second best to a useful na Piarsaigh 15. We never played to our potential, conceded an early goal and were chasing the game from there to the finish. The team played some good football during a year that was disrupted with a multitude of players injuries. We had a cruciate knee injury, 3 broken wrists, a broken nose, a punctured lung and 3 more players who missed games because of stitches to a variety of wounds. As it happens only one of the above injuries happened on the football field. It was an eventful year, but hopeful all the remaining injuries will have cleared up by next year. Team – Tomás Ahern, Luke Buckley, Harry Fitzgerald, Seamu Dillane, Jamie Collins, James Hunt, Rory Cleary, Evan Curry, Tadhg Ahern, Aiden Healy, Tomás Ahern, Daire Mullane, Canoe Fitzgerald, Donach Daly Sean Mckenery. Subs, Jim Ahern, Jim Culhane and Fergal Leahy. Injured players, Calum Buckley, Charlie McDonagh, Ciarán Hunt, Sean Twomey, Jack Sexton, Caelon Lonergan,
