Gael Na Sionnainne/ Áth an tSléibhe 3-13 St Kierans 2-14 AET
We had a fantastic win before a huge crowd on Saturday last in Mick Neville Park in the final of the County Div 2 Shield against near neighbours St Kierans. The opposition started the better of the two teams and had us under a lot of pressure as we seemed nervous on the ball and lacking composure. We gradually improved and by half time the teams were level 0-4 to 0-4. Kierans got on top again in the second half and built up a 6 point lead with 10 minutes to go, to leave us with a mountain to climb. With Calum Buckley now at midfield we gradually got on top and started to use the ball better. The comeback started with a cracking goal from Adam Bennett, which lifted the whole team. We got another great goal, finished calmly by Sean Moore after a good passing movement and a third goal from Evan Curry who rose highest to punch a high ball to the net. With a two point lead it was frantic stuff but St Kierans fought back to score two great points of their own to draw level on a score 3-07 to 2-10 just before the final whistle.
With nothing separating the teams all year we knew extra time was a possibility, so the team caught their breath and with positive words from the management they hit the ground running in extra time. In the first period of 10 minutes they played their best football scoring 4 points without reply. The second half was closer with the expected St Kierans onslaught, but our defence were excellent to hold out for a two point win . Overall a brilliant team performance with the players digging deep and never throwing in the towel when all seemed lost. After the game the County Bord na NOg Chairman presented the Div 2 shield to Captain Billy Hogan in front of our delighted parents and supporters.
