JUNIOR HURLING:
Our junior hurlers had a fine victory over our neighbours Ballybricken in round 4 of the county championship last Saturday 10th September in Cappamore on a 2-22 to 1-13 scoreline. Our lads were slow to settle early on and the early exchanges were tight and tense as ourselves and Bally traded scores: Cathal O’Neill with some points from play and frees along with David Power and Brendan Power scores from play. A fine save from Ger Kennedy and a clearance off the line denied Ballybricken a crucial goal and as the half grew on our half back line of Paraic O’Neill, Cormac Flanagan and Tom Shanahan started to gain more of a foothold. Further points from Cathal and Richard Murphy helped us into a 0-11 to 0-9 lead at the break.
We dominated the exchanges in the second half and further points from Cathal and David stretched the lead out to three points before a Chris Shanahan strike to the net gave us a six point cushion. Darach Skelly, Conor Kirby and Rian O’Byrne were doing trojan work in the forwards winning frees and setting up scores. Our subs made a fine impact and Karl Moloney added a point before Chris struck for a second goal to leave us 12 points ahead. Bally got a consolation goal with a few minutes left on the clock but we scored the last three points of the game, two from Cathal and one from Damo Kearney to leave the final scoreline at 2-22 to 1-13.
Team: Ger Kennedy; Cian Leahy, Jack Dalton, Pádraig Byrnes; Páraic O’Neill, Cormac Flanagan, Tom Shanahan; Cathal O’Neill (0-14), James Conheady; Rian O’Byrne, David Power (0-2), Darach Skelly; Conor Kirby, Richard Murphy (0-1), Brendan Power (0-2). Subs: Chris Shanahan (2-1), Tim Moloney, Damien Kearney (0-1), Karl Moloney (0-1), Donnacha Connolly, Seán Keyes, Tomás Connolly, Ciarán Kennedy, Fergal Egan, Ciarán Humphreys, Eoghan O’Callaghan. This win leaves us at the top of group 1 going into the final round of matches next weekend. Despite this, we are still not assured of a quarter final place and will need to get a result against Templeglantine. We ask all club members to come out and support the lads in this crucial final group game next Sunday 18th September at 1pm in Knockaderry.
UNDER 13 HURLERS:
Hard luck to our under 13 hurlers who lost out to Knockainey in the shield semi final last Thursday on a scoreline of 2-9 to 0-5. We had a very good year in this competition overall and the future looks bright for this group of players in the years to come. We had a panel of 24 players this year with the help of players from the under 11 squad. Thanks to the under 11 management for facilitating this throughout the year and thanks to the under 13 players and coaches for all their hard work and dedication throughout the year.
