Fr. Caseys 3-06 Mungret 1-11
Fr. Caseys Minor footballers faced Mungret at home last Saturday morning in their final group game. With a place in the semi-finals already secured this would be a good test of the Abbeyfeale men against the table toppers. The first half saw Mungret race into a six point lead before the break. Despite having more possession, Fr. Caseys struggled to make an impact in the final third. In contrast, Mungret were taking all the opportunities presented and a well taken goal just before half time gave them a comfortable lead.
Moving Cian Harnett to full forward gave Fr. Caseys added bite up front while Michael Kilbridge and Tim Lyons continued to shade the midfield battle. In defence Calum Boyle and Cathal Woulfe were also excelling as Fr. Caseys tried to forge a path back into the game. As we entered the final quarter, Mungret still held a sizeable lead but with new legs introduced, the team found an extra gear and slowly began their comeback. First Tim Lyons burst through the defence and despatched a brilliant goal to the top left corner and then minutes later Liam O’Connor repeated the feat with an identical goal to leave the deficit at just one point. When Mungret restored a two point cushion it looked like Fr. Caseys had left it too late but there was time for one more goal and Aaron Foley delivered to send Fr. Caseys into the lead. The final whistle greeted with delight by the large home support who were very pleased having witnessed a great game. Despite having a very young side this year this victory will give the team confidence that county honours are definitely within their grasp. We wish both team and management the best of luck in the coming weeks as they prepare for the knockout stages with their next opponent and match date to be confirmed.
