MONALEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
SENIOR FOOTBALL: Commiserations to Monaleen senior footballers and their backroom team who lost out to Newcastle West in their Irish Wire Products county senior football semi-final at Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale on Sunday by just one point, 0-11 to 0-10.
INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL: Best of luck to Monaleen intermediate football side and their backroom team who take on Crecora-Manister in the Griffin Coaches Limerick intermediate relegation final in Claughaun this Saturday, October 16 at 4.30pm. All support appreciated.
U17 HURLERS: Well done to Monaleen U17 hurlers who defeated Kildimo-Pallaskenry 2-15 to 0-14 in the Mr Binman U17 Division 1 Hurling Championship semi-final on Saturday at Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale. Monaleen will now face Newcastlw West in the county final at a date and venue to be confirmed.
U17 FOOTBALLERS: Hard luck to Monaleen U17 footballers who lost out to Galbally in their Division 1 semi-final at Mick Neville Park on Monday night. Monaleen led the game 1-2 to 0-2 at half-time. However, a flurry of late scores saw Galbally win through to the county final on a 2-7 to 1-4 scoreline.
CLUB FUNDRAISER: The club fundraiser Clothes Collection event in aid of Monaleen GAA, Camoge and Ladies Gaelic Football took place on Saturday at our Peafield Road pitch. Thank you to those who helped organise the event and all those who supported it.
GAA CLUB REGISTRATION: It’s that time of year again when we begin to ask parents to pay their child’s membership. However, with the move to Foireann as the main GAA system, we will be synchronising the juvenile and adult registration to one single calendar year system, as per GAA requirements.
Therefore we will not be requesting you to pay for your children until nearer the end of this year, and then annually every December in advance of the next calendar year. If you paid in September 2020 your child is covered to play and train until the end of this year. New age groups which start in September this year will not have to pay until December. We will let you know as soon as registration opens. Thank you for your co-operation, Caroline, Keenan, Paul, Audrey.
LOTTO: The latest Lotto draw took place on Thursday, October 7 with the jackpot standing at €3,600. The numbers drawn were 1, 24, 34 and 35. Winners of the €50 lucky dips were O Halley, Peafield Rd; D. Phelan, Carrigeen; A. Jones, Churchwood. Thank you for your continued support.
CAMOGIE
U15 AUTUMN LEAGUE: Our U15 Camogie girls took on Newcastle West in the opening game of the U15 Autumn League in lovely sunny conditions on Saturday morning. The Monaleen girls started strongly with a well taken inside 3 minutes & followed this up quickly with some well taken points to run up a strong lead early in the game. All the girls played very well on the day & kept the Newcastle West chances to a minimum. The team play was excellent for our first game in a while & we created plenty of scoring chances which will give us confidence going into the next few matches. All the coaches & girls would like to wish Grace who was in sparkling form at the moment, a speedy recovery from the injury she picked up during the game. Team:

U9 MATCHES: Well done to our U9 team who packed 2 matches into the last week. Firstly a trip out to Patrickswell Monday evening in wet miserable conditions. This was followed by a trip to Ballybrown on Sunday evening. Great to see so many matches being played at this stage of the year.
U8 UPDATE: Our U8 team hosted Ahane at the clubhouse pitch on Sunday morning. Great to see so many numbers for both clubs at this young age. Both teams split into 3 groups to play their matches ensuring that all the girls received plenty of game time.
AGM: Reminder that the Club AGM takes place on Wednesday 27th at 7:30pm in Monaleen Clubhouse.
LADIES FOOTBALL:
JUNIOR TEAM: The Groody Gaels ladies junior team played Athea in the second round of the county Junior championship in Athea on Sunday last (10th October). In splendid sunshine, Groody Gaels gave a super team performance but just missed out as Athea came away with the win on the day.
In a very strong first half display, Groody Gaels started the game the better of the two sides and led the scoring early on thanks to a superbly converted score from corner forward Chloe Tobin. The Groody dominance continued with an excellently worked point from wing forward Saoirse Fitzgerald and a brilliantly finished goal from full forward Laura Stocksborough. Laura also picked up Groody’s last score of the half with a well-executed point. Athea worked their way into the game as the half progressed and converted several chances to leave the half time score at Groody Gaels 1-3, Athea 3-2.
Groody made a strong start to the second half with two super points from corner forward Aoife Neville and wing forward Saoirse Fitzgerald before centre forward Rachel O’Dell increased the pressure on Athea with two super points, one from play and one from a well converted free. Groody Gaels continued to battle strongly throughout the half but couldn’t get the all important goal to level the scoreline. Corner forward Chloe Tobin expertly converted the teams final score from a close range free before the final whistle with Athea taking the win on a scoreline of Groody Gaels 1-8, Athea 3-8.
Great credit to this young team of talented footballers who battled all the way through the game to give their best performance of the season. Next up is round 3 of the championship away to Ahane in two weeks’ time. Special mention to our generous Team Sponsor Trade Electric for all their support this season.
