SOUTH GAA NOTES
A BUSY WEEKEND FOR LIMERICK TEAMS IN MUNSTER FOOTBALL and HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP:
Another very busy weekend ahead for Limerick in Munster Football and Hurling championship action, after what was a very productive weekend gone by, winning two National League titles and a Munster Hurling Championship Quarter Final .
The Senior Football team made the long journey to Markievicz Park in Sligo where they played Sligo in Allianz Football League Round 7 game on Saturday last 24th. October, the prize on offer for Limerick a victory would ensure promotion to Division Three 3 for 2021, and this was the result when the visitors put in a great performance, leading at the interval by 1.09 to 0.03, the home side got more into the game in the second half but Limerick held out for a well merited win on a 1.16 to 1.14 victory, this coupled with Wicklow defeating in their game, meant Limerick were crowned Division 4 Allianz Football League Champions and promoted to Division 3. Well Done to Team Management, Backroom staff which included Adrian O’Brien (Kilmallock – S & C Coach) and Dr Stephen Lucey (Croom -Team Doctor) and panel of players, special to players from the South Division, Tommie and Robbie Childs (Galtee Gaels) with Michael Donovan (Galbally) made a very big impact in the game when introduced.
On Sunday 25th. October, Limerick Senior Hurlers went out in defence of two titles when they played Clare in Semple Stadium Thurles ,the game was a Quarter Final game in the Munster Hurling Championship and also doubled up as Division 1Allianz Hurling League Final. A very interesting game was in prospect in what was a local derby, the atmosphere was indeed very different in a game played behind closed doors, the first half was very evenly contested with sides level at the half time interval 0.15 each. However the second half saw Limerick well on top with a huge improvement in play and they ran out winners by a ten point margin 0.36 to 1.23 and march on to a Munster Semi Final with Tipperary in Pairc Ui Caoimh on Sunday 1st. November at 4pm.Well Done to Team Manager John Kiely (Galbally) his selectors and backroom team and players, special mention to the players from the South Division who started the game, Nicky Quaid (Effin), Sean Finn (Bruff), Paddy O’Loughlin and Greame Mulcahy (both Kilmallock) while David Reidy (Dromin/ Athlacca was introduced. Also on the panel were Barry Hennessy and Robbie Hanley (both Kilmallock)
This weekend, the football team are once again first into the fray on this Saturday evening 31st October when they travel to play Waterford in Fraher Field Dungarvan at 7pm. This is Limerick’s third game in Dungarvan this year, on Thursday evening 2nd. January the sides met in the McGrat Cup when Limerick scored a 2.10 to 0.10 win, and on Saturday 25th. January, Limerick were back to play their opening Allianz Football League game and once again it was the visitors who prevailed to win by 1.10 to 0.10. Limerick may the journey buoyed by the victory in Sligo last Saturday while Waterford lost out to Antrim in their final game of the League also Saturday last after an indifferent league campaign. A close encounter is predicted and let’s hope Limerick can record a win and reach the Provincial Semi Final where Clare or Tipperary would provide the opposition.
On Sunday the Hurlers make the trip to Leeside to meet Tipperary in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship in Pairc Ui Caoimh at 4pm. The sides have met on two occasion over the past twelve months. In the Munster Hurling Leage, Limerick scored a 2.22 to 1.17 in a game played in LIT Gaelic Groundson Friday 20th. December. Five weeks later the sides met in Semple Stadium Thurles on Saturday 25th. January in the opening Round of the Allianz Hurling League, again victory went to Limerick on a scoreline of 2.14 to 0.18. Both Limerick (Munster & League) and Tipperary (All Ireland Champions) are two of the Counties favoured by many to lift the Liam MacCarthy Cup in December, so the game on Sunday should provide a very tight affair, with winners reaching the Provincial decider two weeks later when Cork or Waterford (who play on Saturday) will provide the opposition
Best of Luck is extended to both Senior Footballers and Hurlers this weekend.
