TRIBUTE TO DR MICHAEL (Mick) LUCEY RIP.
It was with great sadness Limerick GAA was informed of the sad passing of Dr Mick Lucey, former team doctor to the Limerick Senior Footballers. Dr Mick served the Limerick Senior Footballers for close to 20 years. And when the need necessitated, he was always available to help out with other Limerick football and hurling teams.
His roots may have been in Cork but Dr Mick looked after the Limerick GAA Football Family as if they were his own. He had the utmost of respect from all those who came in contact with him and this was very evident in the tributes paid to him.
Current senior footballers Iain Corbett and Donal O’Sullivan paid tribute to him. Iain said “Dr Mick was always great company whether be at training or match day. He was a top professional at his work, but he also became a great friend to everyone involved in Limerick Football”
Donal O’Sullivan said “Dr Mick Lucey was a massive part of the Limerick GAA family” Donal a doctor himself said “He looked after me so well when I started out on the panel. He gave me a beautiful present of a stethoscope and medical books when I finished my final year in Medicine. He always said he would give me a start when I became a GP and it wasn’t an empty promise because he was always going out of his way to help others. Dr Mick would tell great stories of his time involved with Garryowen and Munster and other sporting circles. He would be in the corner of a dressing room before a big game with a word of encouragement or a quick story to lighten the tension in the dressing room. At training he would come over to see how I was getting on in college or to lend a bit of welcome advice. Those memories will stick with me. Dr Mick will be sorely missed by the Limerick GAA family. His influence is far reaching and a testament to his character”
Senior Football Manager Billy Lee said “It is with great sadness that I learned today of the passing of Dr Mick Lucey. Mick was a gentleman of the highest order with a great sense of humour. He was a very humble man, kind, considerate and extremely helpful at all times. He loved coming on away trips with us until he retired 2 years ago. I always found that on tough days or disappointing days out, Mick always had a wise, calming and encouraging word for me before he departed the bus”
Former Limerick Senior Football captain Seanie Buckley said “Dr Mick Lucey was ever present during my playing days with Limerick. He travelled the length and breadth of the country with us and for us. He was the ultimate professional, a calm demeanour and a knowing nod through the highs and lows. No matter what was at stake, the players welfare was his priority. His humour, high spirits and devilment were often as much a tonic as anything in his medical bag. He will be sadly missed”
In recent years Dr Mick retired as senior football doctor and handed the baton over to his son Dr Stephen who is the current team doctor.
A great servant, a great character, Dr Mick will be sorely missed.
We extend our deepest sympathy to his sons Stephen, Mark and David and daughters Michelle & Caroline and the extended Lucey Family.
Rest peacefully Dr Mick
