County Junior ‘A’ Football Championship ½ Final
St. Kierans 0.20 Adare 1.18
Following their comprehensive quarter final victory over Ballylanders the Junior footballers made the short journey to Athea on Sunday afternoon to take on group 1 table toppers Adare with a place in the County Final against Camogue Rovers the prize on offer for the victor. With both clubs bowing out of the senior championship over the past week motivation was high within both clubs to advance to the County decider. We played with the assistance of the wind in the opening half, playing towards Carrigkerry but it was the men from the banks of the Maigue who got the games opening score before a sublime two pointer from Anthony Molyneaux from outside the ark got us off the mark. From here we would hold the lead throughout the opening half thanks to further scores from Ian Mackessy, James O’ Connor, Luke Corrigan and Oisin Ryan. We played some excellent football throughout the first half moving the ball quickly in the overcast conditions and applying fierce pressure to Adare throughout the field. At the half time break we held a three-point advantage, 0.9 to 0.6 with experienced duo of James O’ Connor and Anthony Molyneaux leading the charge ably supported by a youthful cohort of players including Mikey Kelly, Darragh McMahon and Fionn Gleeson. We stretched our lead to five points straight away into the second period as we grew in confidence against the youthful Adare side. Adare kept themselves intact with several frees and punished us for a lack of discipline resulting in the ball being brought forward on several occasions. Given the playing conditions a goal was always going to have a major impact on the game and we were fiercely unlucky not to find the back of the Adare net as James O’ Connor’s effort was blocked by an oncoming Adare defender. As the final whistle approached Adare continued to punish indiscretions on our part. With sixty-two minutes on the clock and leading by two points we were dealt a catastrophic blow when Adare were awarded a late penalty. Goalkeeper vs Goalkeeper and it was the Adare keeper who would win the battle to slot the ball past Con Enright in the Kieran’s goal who once again performed excellently throughout the eighty minutes of football. With the game in its dying embers, we managed to win possession from the kickout and work the ball into a scoreable position to be awarded a late free which Anthony Molyneaux slotted over the crossbar to send the game into extra time. Adare would reclaim the lead in extra time before another Anthony Molyneaux two pointer put us in the ascendency once more. Given the ferocious nature of the game in heavy conditions bodies began to tire as the game progressed. Darragh McMahon would restore our advantage in the second period of extra time before an Adare free tied up the game once again as the final whistle approached. Experiencing a numerical disadvantage following a second half dismissal we began to find it increasingly difficult to deal with the Adare side who pushed forward in search of a winner. Adare’s perseverance would be rewarded with what would be the final score of the game. Not willing to lie down our lads fought to the very end. Despite our best efforts we couldn’t fashion one last score to send the game to penalties and at the final whistle it would be Adare who would advance to the county decider this Saturday. For the second week in succession, we bow out of the championship at the Athea venue. Both sets of players deserve a huge amount of credit and provided excellent value for money for the large crowd in attendance who were thoroughly entertained by the eighty minutes of football. while we are undoubtedly disappointed to bow out at the penultimate stage of the championship in a game we had within our grasp we can take huge pride in the battling performance in which we played some excellent football. The players and management team of Noel Broderick, Patrick Windle, James Windle and Nicky Kelly deserve huge credit for their performances throughout the 2025 season which has seen the side contest three finals, winning the West and County League titles, lose the West Championship final to a Fr. Casey’s side who contest the County Junior Premier final this weekend and subsequently qualify for a County Semi final in our first year at this level. There is massive potential within this group and while we didn’t qualify for the 2025 final with continued hard work there is no reason why this group cannot continue to press ahead for further honours in 2026 as we add some new members to the panel from the minor ranks who will add depth to the squad.
Team vs Adare Con Enright, Shay Greaney, Shane Lynch, Ian Mackessy, Mikey Kelly, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Fionn Gleeson, John Doyle, James O’ Connor, Cathal McEnery, Jack Harnett, Darragh McMahon, Luke Corrigan, Oisin Ryan, Anthony Molyneaux, Cillian Heffernan, Bryan Sheehan, Ray Cahill, Ben Cussen, Darragh Breen, Jack Mulqueen, Dan Duggan.
