County Senior Football Championship Round 5
St. Kierans 0.7 Mungret/St. Pauls 3.12
Following the disappointment of the round 4 defeat to Kildimo / Pallaskenry the senior footballers returned to championship action following a two week break on Saturday afternoon. Returning to Askeaton which historically hasn’t proven to be a happy hunting ground for us in recent seasons we knew that victory would secure our place in the quarter finals. Failure to secure the win would leave us in a vulnerable position of being dependant on results elsewhere to secure qualification and so it played out as we suffered a heavy defeat to the 2024 semi-finalists. On the day we failed to perform in the opening half and were blown away by the city side as we trailed 3.5 to 0.2 at the interval. On what was a difficult for all concerned the second half performance Conor McMahon and return to action and form of Alan Daly were encouraging. At the final whistle we would ultimately suffer our second defeat of the championship and our faith now lay in the hands of Galtee Gaels. If the south Limerick side defeated Kildimo / Pallaskenry then our passage to the quarter finals was assured but a Kildimo / Pallaskenry victory would condemn us to elimination from the championship in the group stage for the third year in succession. While we were extremely disappointed with the manner of the performance in a game that we simply never got to the pitch of morale was boosted somewhat following the arrival of news of a Galtee Gaels victory. Two opening round victories over Galtee Gaels and Ballylanders and a draw against Newcastlewest would be enough to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2022 and we now look forward to the prospect of an all-west encounter against 2024 County finalists Fr. Casey’s who overcame Na Piarsaigh on Saturday to secure second position in Group 1.Both sides met in the 2019 quarter final in Newcastlewest. On that afternoon the shooting exploits of Sean McSweeney ensured that we advanced to our first County Senior semi-final since 2005. We will hope to put our recent bad fortune behind us and recapture our earlier championship form in the hope of qualifying for the County Semi-Final in two weeks’ time but undoubtedly, we face a huge challenge against the Abbeyfeale side. The Senior Football Quarter final is due to take place on Saturday October 25th. Time and venue to be confirmed. Team v Mungret/St. Pauls Donie Nolan, Mossie Shine, Shane Fitzgerald, Mike Shanahan, Sean Long, Brendan McCarthy, Mike Long, Darragh Treacy, Liam Kennedy, Sean Ryan, John Hayes, Eoin McEnery, Alan Daly, Adam Lacey, Kevin Meade, Jack O’ Sullivan, Conor McMahon, Anthony Mullins, Aaron Heffernan, Cormac Mann, Dylan Moloney, Lorcan Murphy, James O’ Connor, Darragh McMahon, Darragh Breen, Bryan Sheehan, Luke Corrigan, Fionn Gleeson.
County Junior ‘A’ Football Championship Round 5
St. Kierans 1.14 Camogue Rovers 1.13
The Junior footballers showed great resilience on Sunday afternoon to recover from a five-point deficit to overcome the challenge of Camogue Rovers in the final round of the County Junior ‘A’ Championship. Returning to Ballybrown GAA grounds in Clarina for our second time in the campaign we trailed for much of the opening half against the south Limerick side who have been bolstered by the addition of several players from Bruff this season. Both sides came into the game with qualification already assured and were playing for an elusive semi-final berth. For much of the game it looked as if we would come out on the wrong side of the result, but the lads kept intact in the first half before digging deep in the final quarter despite having a man sent off to overcome the challenge of the southern side. We trailed by a goal at the interval with opening half scores coming from Anthony Molyneax and Mikey Kelly. The south Limerick men got their second half off to an excellent start and soon increased their lead to five, but this seemed inspire a revival from our lads who refused to down tools and fought their way back into the game. Scores from Anthony Molyneaux and Cathal McEnery reduced our deficit before the decisive moment of the game. Molyneaux linked up with full forward Oisin Ryan who slipped a pass to the oncoming Darragh McMahon who showed a predators instinct to find the back of the bet on the 50th minute mark. Jack Ben Harnett added to his tally as we took the lead with the final whistle approaching. The southerners poured on the pressure as we fought tooth and nail for possession. Much credit must go to the players who for the second round in succession recovered from a large deficit to work their way back into the game and at the final whistle we would emerge victorious by the slightest of margins. At the conclusion of the group stage, we sit level on nine points with Hospital / Herbertstown with four wins and a draw from our five games. Due to several walkovers in the group score difference could not be taken into consideration. As a result, Hospital advance directly to the County Semi-final as they scored three goals to our two in our round 4 encounter. We finish second in group 2 with Camogue Rovers taking the final quarter final berth. In the quarter final we will play Ballylanders in what is a clash between the 2023 and 2024 County Junior ‘B’ Champions. The two sides met in 2023 in the County Junior ‘B’ semi final with the south Limerick side taking the honours before capturing County honours. The knockout stages of all football championships are due to take place on the weekend of October 24th to 27th. We will have full fixture details next week.
