St. Kierans GAA Club Notes:
County Championships 2025:
Following Limerick senior footballers victory over Wexford last Sunday in the Tailteann Cup ¼ Final the opening two rounds of the County Senior Football and Junior ‘A’ Football Championships have been put back. Limerick play Wicklow this Sunday in Croke Park in the ½ Final. If Limerick are defeated the opening round of the championship will take place on the weekend of June 26-29. If Limerick defeat Wicklow on Sunday, the Tailteann Cup Final is scheduled to take place on July 12 in Croke Park which would see the championship postponed until after the final.
West Junior ‘A’ Football Championship Final:
St. Kierans v Fr. Caseys
Following last gasp victory over Athea the Junior ‘A’ Footballers will renew rivalries with Fr. Casey’s in the West Championship Final. Both sides have already met this campaign in the West League decider when we emerged with a three-point victory over the Fealesiders. Fr. Casey’s advanced to the final following an excellent three-point victory over Granagh / Ballingarry while we enjoyed victory by the slightest of margins thanks to a late goal against 2025 Premier Junior runners up Athea. With the County Championship fast approaching this is the perfect preparation for both sides who will be looking to have an impact on their respective County Championships. At present the game is due to take place this Friday eveningwith a time and venue yet to be confirmed. We will update all club members of the fixture details in the coming days.
West Junior ‘A’ Football Championship ½ Final:
St. Kierans 1.9 Athea 1.8
The Junior footballers welcomed neighbours Athea to Pairc Naomh Ciaraín, Ardagh on Tuesday evening last for the West Championship ½ Final. fielding a much-changed side to the one who overcame Croom in the County League final we faced a huge step up in opposition against an Athea side who qualified for the County Premier Junior final in 2024 and are operating a grade above our junior side in the County Championship. We started poorly and couldn’t get into the game trailing by four points inside the opening quarter. Given the inexperience within the side on the night we soon got into the game and grew in confidence once we got our hands on the ball with Mikey Kelly, Conor McMahon and Seamus Mangan impressing as we reversed our early deficit to go into the lead for the first time thanks to several excellent scores. Despite this we trailed by two points at the interval following an Athea goal just before the half time whistle. Late goals would ultimately have a major impact on the game. As the second half ensued Athea would increase their half time lead to three and were it not for some very wayward shooting in front of goal they may well have increased their tally further. Athea’s inaccuracy in front of goal allowed us to stay in the game as the final whistle approached. With moments to go Cathal McEnery would find his way throw the Athea defence to coolly slot the ball past the despairing keeper and ensure our place in the divisional final. Well done to the players and management team on what was an excellent victory on a night when we were shorn the services of nine of the team who defeated Croom in the Co. League final. Team v Athea Con Enright, Michael Murphy, Shane Lynch, Mike Upton, James O’ Connor, Anthony Mullins, Mikey Kelly, Conor McMahon, Jack Mulqueen, Seamus Mangan, Cathal McEnery, Ray Cahill, Darragh McMahon, Brian Sheehan, Eoghan Sheehan, Dan Duggan, John Doyle, Darragh Breen.
