St. Kierans GAA Club Notes:
West Junior ‘A’ Football League Final:
St. Kierans v Fr. Caseys
Saturday May 17th in Newcastle West at 7pm
The Junior footballers contest the West Junior ‘A’ League final this Saturday evening against Fr. Casey’s. We come into Saturday’s game following victories over Ballybrown, Ahane and Castlemahon while we drew against Granagh / Ballingarry in a highly entertaining encounter in Ballingarry. En route to the final Fr. Casey’s have overcome Mountcollins, Castlemahon and Granagh / Ballingarry with the only blemish to their record coming with a one-point defeat to neighbours and 2024 County Premier Junior finalists Athea. On Saturday night we face a huge step up in opposition against an Abbeyfeale side who comprehensively saw off the challenge of Ballingarry in their semi-final. We have played extremely well so far this campaign with a very youthful side, many of whom are getting their first taste of adult football and have certainly adapted well but we will have to put in a huge performance if we are to add another title at this level.
West Junior ‘A’ Football League Semi-Final:
St. Kierans 2.13 Castlemahon 2.10
The junior footballers welcomed Castlemahon to Pairc Naomh Ciarán, Ardagh on Wednesday evening for what would be the first football game to be played at our new facility. Containing ten of the team from the 2025 County final we faced a big challenge against a Castlemahon side who are operating at premier junior level in the County Championship, and they began the game brightly taking the lead inside the opening quarter against a youthful St. Kieran’s side fielding nine u20’s in the starting 15. Despite playing some excellent football for periods of the opening half we trailed at the interval with out scores coming from Jack Harnett and Jack O’ Sullivan while our inside line of Oisin Commane, Oisin Ryan and Luke Corrigan began to grow into the game as the half progressed with each scoring and giving the Castlemahon defence several problems. Trailing 2.5 to 0.7 at half time there was a noticeable change in difference in the second period, midfield pairing Jack O’ Sullivan and Donie Nolan began to exert control around the middle third while Mikey Kelly’s darting runs forward created problems for the Castlemahon defence. We found the back of the bet for the first time thanks to an excellent goal by Luke Corrigan before a series of two pointers and a second goal from Jack O’ Sullivan put us in the ascendency. Castlemahon to their credit kept working hard throughout the whistle to reduce their deficit but at the final whistle we had done enough to advance to the West decider. Well done to the players who put in another excellent performance and the management team who have guided the group to another final and their first at Junior ‘A’ level since promotion. We will face off against Castlemahon later this campaign when the two sides meet in the West Junior ‘A’ Football Championship ¼ final. Team vs Castlemahon Con Enright, Michael Murphy, Shane Fitzgerald, Shay Greaney, Mikey Kelly, Conor McMahon, Fionn Gleeson, Donie Nolan, Jack O’ Sullivan, Cathal McEnery, Jack Harnett, Eoghan Sheehan, Luke Corrigan, Oisin Ryan, Oisin Commane, John Doyle, Shane Lynch, Michael Upton, Cathal O’ Connor, Darragh Breen, Bryan Sheehan, Jack Mulqueen, James O’ Connor.
