St. Kierans GAA Club Notes:

West Senior Football League Round 5:
St. Kierans 2.13 Adare 2.13
The group stage of the West League concluded on Saturday afternoon as we travelled to Adare to take on the County Champions. Both sides had already secured safe passage to the West Championship semi-final. we played against a strong breeze in the opening half in excellent underfoot conditions in the redeveloped field in Adare. The home side made the most of the elements in the opening half and raced into a 0.4-0.2 lead inside the opening quarter with points from Liam Kennedy and Eoin McEnery getting us off the mark. The game was played at a frantic pace throughout the field with several hard hits going in from both sides adding to the intensity. We trailed by four points at the interval, 1.7 to 1.3 with our goal coming from midfielder Liam Kennedy. Now playing with the assistance of the wind in the second half we upped our intensity and soon reduced our first half deficit thanks to scores from Alan Daly, Dylan Moloney and our second goal of the game from Michael Shanahan. We now began to grow in confidence and took a five-point lead over the home side who to their credit used all of their experience to force their way back into the game as the final whistle approached. With ten minutes to go Adare found the back of the net for the second time and they pushed hard to tie up the game. We continued to work hard throughout the field with Shane Fitzgerald and the newly introduced for his senior debut Mikey Kelly impressing with driving runs forward from the back while experienced players Brendan McCarthy and Aaron Heffernan did well to quell the Adare onslaught. With three minutes on the clock Adare retook the lead. Alan Daly ensured that the sides were level once more before an Eoghan Sheehan point put us back into the ascendency. A late Adare score tied up the game once more and at the final whistle there was to be no separating the two sides. The manner of the performance was extremely pleasing as we were without the services of five or six first team regulars. Both sides will meet once again on the bank holiday weekend with a place in the West Championship final the prize on offer.
