St Kierans GAA Club Notes:
West Intermediate Hurling League Round 1:
St. Kierans 1.22 Knockaderry 1.13
The intermediate hurlers got their 2025 campaign off to a winning start on Saturday afternoon with a comprehensive victory over Knockaderry in round 1 of the West League in Coolcappagh. Both sides preparations were affected by forty-five-minute delay to the throw in forcing each team to conduct two warmups in advance of the game. fielding a very youthful side with all but three of the starting fifteen under the age of thirty and one player in Conor McMahon making his first start at this level we began brightly against an equally youthful Knockaderry side who had contested the County Premier Junior Championship semi-final in 2024. Sean Ryan opened the scoring with a well-earned score. The visiting side were quickly on the board thanks to their ace marksman from placed balls and could count themselves unlucky to have two first half goals. We worked hard for possession up front fighting tirelessly for possession off breaking ball. Four first half points from the economical Conor Woulfe up front as well as two from Cillian Meade, deployed in a roaming roll around the middle third as well as some excellently struck frees from Jack O’ Sullivan ensured that we took a five-point lead in at the half time interval. We played up the hill in the second period with the assistance of a stiff breeze and began the half brightly. Jack O’ Sullivan capitalised on a moment of indecision at the back by the men in green to get inside and found the back of the net to put us in a commanding position. Knockaderry were dealt a major blow midway through the half when they were reduced to fourteen men following an off the ball indiscretion and we took full advantage of our numerical superiority. At the final whistle we came away with a nine-point victory having put together some excellent spells of play throughout the hour. With the two points secured we now have a two week in advance of our round 2 game against Feohanagh.
Team vs Knockaderry Cillian Ambrose (0.2), Shay Greaney, Aaron Heffernan, Mossie Shine, Sean Long, Brendan McCarthy, Fionn Gleeson (0.1), Ian Mackessy, Cathal McEnery, Conor McMahon, Sean Ryan (0.2), Conor Woulfe (0.4), Cillian Meade (0.3), Michael Murphy, Jack O’ Sullivan (1.10, 7f), Anthony Mullins, Cormac Mann, Michael Long, Cathal O’ Connor, Derry O’ Connor, Bryan Sheahan, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Eoin McEnery.
West Junior ‘B’ Hurling League Round 1:
St. Kierans 2.4 Croagh/Kilfinny 2.27
The Junior ‘B’ hurlers got their league campaign underway on Sunday afternoon as they travelled to Croagh to take on the home side. We came up against a very strong Croagh side containing several players with Intermediate championship experience and found it very difficult to live with their pace throughout the field. With more players to return to the fold in the weeks ahead to strengthen our hand we hope to continue to put in some good performances as we build towards the championship. Next up in round 2 we travel to Dromcollogher to take on Drom / Broadford where we can hopefully take the positives from round 1 and put in a strong performance to help us secure the two points.
Team vs Croagh/Kilfinny Jack O’ Sullivan, James Woulfe, Mikey Breen, Bryan Sheahan, Sean Long, Edward Fitzgerald, William Steele, Michael Long, Con Enright, Sean Hughes, Cathal O’ Connor, Oisin Commane, Derry O’ Connor, Dan Duggan, Shane Murphy.
