St. Kierans GAA Club Notes:
West Senior Football League Round 2:
St. Kierans 0-08 Newcastle West 2-08
The senior footballers made the short journey to Newcastle West on Saturday for round two of the West League. We got our league campaign off to a flying start with a comprehensive victory over Fr. Casey’s and morale was high that we could build on our opening round win. We fielded a team showing three changes from round 1 with Aaron Heffernan, Shane Fitzgerald and Kevin Meade deputising for Diarmuid Mulcahy, Anthony Mullins and Darragh Treacy. As always games between the two sides are hard hitting and fiercely contested encounters and Saturday’s game was no different with the home side starting with intent hoping to secure their first win of their league campaign. Newcastle West got off to an excellent start finding the back of the net inside the opening quarter to lead 1.2 to 0.2. As ever Alan Daly was proving to be extremely dangerous up front and caused the home defence several problems throughout the half. The sides were deadlocked at the interval 1.4 to 0.7 as we recovered from our slow start with five points in the second quarter. We lost the services of Lorcan Murphy midway though the opening half through injury which was a major blow already missing several key players. The second half was closely contested with both sides adapting to the new rules. We failed to capitalize on several scorable chances which were duly punished by the home side who once again took the lead with ten minutes to go. We pushed hard for a level and were unlucky not to find the back of the Newcastle West net late on before the home side hit us on the counterattack to find the back of the net leaving sub-keeper Con Enright with little chance. At the final whistle we came away with a six-point defeat in what was a very evenly contested game throughout the hour as both sides continue to adapt to the new playing rules and build towards the County Championship. The senior football league now takes a two-week hiatus for the start of the Intermediate and Junior ‘B’ Hurling league. Next up in round 3 we travel to 2024 County Intermediate Champions Rathkeale on March 29. Team vs Fr. Caseys Cormac Mann, Mossie Shine, Aaron Heffernan, Shane Fitzgerald, Mike Shanahan, Brendan McCarthy, Kevin Meade, Lorcan Murphy, Liam Kennedy, Fionn Gleeson, John Hayes, Sean Ryan, Luke Corrigan, Alan Daly, Michael Long, Con Enright, Shay Greaney, Oisin Commane.
