ST. KIERAN’S GAA CLUB NOTES

Comortás Peil Paidí ó’ Sé 2022
The 2022 season got underway this past weekend when our senior footballers made the long journey to Gallarus, West Kerry for the 2022 Comortás Peil Paidí O’ Sé. We began our campaign against Carbery Rangers from West Cork and it is fair to say that both games were the epitome of games of two halves with playing conditions being greatly effected by a storm blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. Playing with the assistance of the storm we began our opening game the better of the two sides with an early goal and point from Dylan Moloney putting us in the lead going in at the interval against a much more seasoned Rosscarbery side. We found it challenging to play into the storm in the second period as the west Cork side upped the ante and were far more clinical in front of goal when they had the elements and they emerged victorious 3.5 to 1.1. In our second game we came up against Mayo kingpins Castlebar Mitchell’s and it was evident that the lads learned from the challenges of our opening game and there was a marked improvement in our performance in particular in the opening half when we played with the elements once more. We played some excellent football in the opening half with scores coming from Kevin Guina, Michael Long and a goal from Lorcan Murphy giving us the lead at the interval. As the second half progressed the Mayo side upped the ante and began to play very direct focusing on an aerial bombardment into the square which was challenging at times. At the final whistle there was disappointment as the Mayo side came away with the victory by the slightest of margins but all in all an excellent experience for all the players concerned. It is far to say it was a Kieran’s team filled with youthful exuberance with no fewer than four players getting their first taste of senior football namely Lorcan Murphy, Michael Long, Shay Greaney and Cillian Heffernan while Adam Lacey got his first outing for the club following his transfer from Kerins O’ Rahilly’s in Tralee. The teams focus now shifts to the upcoming county league campaign which gets underway on Patrick’s weekend when we welcome near neighbours Newcastlewest to Coolcappagh. Elsewhere in the group we face off against Gerald Griffins, St Senan’s and Kildimo/Pallaskenry.
