ST. KIERAN’S
West Senior Football League Round 3:
St. Kieran’s 3.10 St. Senan’s 2.6
Knockaderry was the venue on Saturday afternoon last for round three of the West League against near neighbours St. Senan’s. Played in excellent underfoot conditions our opponents registered the games opening score before Dylan Moloney opened our account with a precisely placed penalty inside the opening five minutes. The opening half was a tense affair as a strong breeze had a big effect on the game. We played against the wind in the opening half against a physically stronger Senan’s side. Up front we were wayward at times throughout the sixty-minute encounter but there were spells of positivity in particular from wing back Shane Fitzgerald who cut through the heart of the Senan’s defence on the twenty-minute mark to register our second goal of the game. At half time we led 2.4 to 0.5 and with the wind at our back in the second period optimism was high that we could push on for the win. To Senan’s credit they got themselves back into the game in the second half following early scores from Dylan Moloney and Anthony Molyneaux. A moment of indecision on our part saw our lead reduced to three as Senan’s pounced to find the back of our net. The lads quickly recovered from adversity and we were soon back on the board with further scores from Dylan Moloney and John Hayes before Moloney converted his second penalty of the game and our third goal. The Foynes/Shanagolden men kept working hard to the death and their perseverance paid off when they found the back of the net for the second time to reduce our lead to seven at the final whistle. With Saturday’s victory it is three wins from our three league games to date with our final group game coming in two weeks’ time against Gerald Griffins in Ballyhahill. Well done to the players for grinding out the win on Saturday afternoon. Once again it was great to see so many young players making a positive contribution to the team and slotting in seamlessly to the senior side with strong performances from Mike Shanahan, Aaron Heffernan, Shane Fitzgerald and Lorcan Murphy.
West Junior Football League:
St. Kieran’s 2.17 Drom/Broadford 0.3
Our junior footballers made it three wins from three and put themselves in a very strong position for a place in the knockout stages of the league on Sunday evening with a comprehensive victory over Drom/Broadford. Short of the services of a number of more experienced players due to injury a youthful Kieran’s side played some excellent football throughout and were soon in the ascendency. The foundations for victory were laid in the opening half as we led 0.9 to 0.2 in the opening half before pushing on in the second period scoring 2.8 and only conceding a solitary point in the second half. With Sunday’s victory we sit top of the group alongside Munster club finalists Granagh/Ballingarry who we have yet to play. There is a two week break now as the junior A and B hurling sides return to action this week. Well done to the players and management for another excellent victory on Sunday night. It is extremely important that we continue to field a junior side as it provides our younger players with an invaluable introduction to adult football as well as providing senior panellists with important game time also.
