ST KIERAN’S

County Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship Round 4:
St. Kieran’s 2.15 Doon 0.14
The Junior hurlers made it four wins from four on Sunday evening with a hard-earned victory over east Limerick side Doon in Caherdavin. Preparations for the game were disrupted in advance due to the orange weather alert which brought an overnight deluge of rainfall to the south-west resulting in a change of venue from Childers Road to Caherdavin to the newly refurbished Na Piarsaigh GAA grounds. The men from the West Tipperary border began the game the brighter of the two sides and we trailed by three points after fifteen minutes of the game, 7-4 as we struggled to cope early with the intensity of the youthful Doon side. Following our slow start there was a noticeable change in our intensity levels as the first half ensued and we went in at the interval with a two-point lead 9-7 having played some excellent passages of hurling in the second quarter with Darragh Treacy, Johnny McCarthy and Mossie Shine in particular performing admirably. The second half saw the introduction of Liam Kennedy who immediately made a positive contribution. His physical and aerial presence was beginning to prove a handful for the east Limerick club as we doubled our half time led to four points after fifteen minutes of the second half. To Doon’s credit they kept themselves in the game and as the game drew to a conclusion they pushed hard for the elusive goal of their own to level up the game. As has been the case throughout the campaign we have been able to find goals at important moments and once again when the game was in the firing line goals from Darragh Treacy and Eoin McEnery proved decisive in our charge for glory. At the final whistle we came away with a seven-point win but in truth the game was much closer as we were pushed to the pin of our collars by a very competitive and eager Doon side who despite the loss are still in with an excellent chance of progression from the group to the quarter finals. With Sunday’s win we have advanced to the quarter finals of the county championship for the second year in succession which is an excellent achievement for this group of players who are currently competing on both fronts having already secured passage to the knockout stages of the senior football championship. Well done to the players and management on an excellent performance and victory on Sunday evening. This group is currently playing an excellent brand of hurling and has the capability to make further progress in this championship. With Sunday’s win we have secured top spot in the group with one round remaining. Regardless of the result in this week’s final round game against Mungret/St. Pauls we will top our group and face off against one of the qualifying second place sides from groups 1,2 or 4 in the quarter finals in the coming weeks. We are still awaiting confirmation of this weekends fixture against Mungret which is due to take place in Askeaton. We will confirm the time and date with group members in the coming days.
