ST. KIERAN’S
West Intermediate Hurling League Round 2
St. Kieran’s 0.10 Tournafulla1.22
Our junior hurlers welcomed Tournafulla to Coolcappagh last Saturday evening for round 2 of the West League. A youthful Kieran’s side played with the assistance of a stiff breeze in the opening half and began the game brightly with early scores coming from Johnny McCarthy and Ian Mackessy. At the back our defence coped well with the dangerous Tournafulla forward line that operated in the County Intermediate Championship in 2021. There was no separating the two teams at half time as they were deadlocked on eight points apiece. We could well have gone into the interval trailing were it not for an excellent save from goalkeeper Tom McMahon just before half time. Missing no fewer than eleven panellists against an experienced Tournafulla side our opponents upped the ante at the start of the second half as we began to struggle to win primary possession in the middle third against the physically stronger Tour side that began to exert their dominance and picked off a number of good scores in the second half. At the final whistle it was our visitors who took the victory but despite the loss a number of positives can be taken from the game going forward. Once again a number of younger players have got a taste of junior a hurling and with three more league games in the coming weeks there is ample opportunity for players to stake a claim for a championship berth.
