County Senior Football Championship:
The 2022 County Senior Football Championship gets underway this Thursday evening when we make the short journey to the Bog Garden Rathkeale for our opening round encounter against 2021 County Intermediate Football Champions Kildimo/Pallaskenry. We go into the game following very productive County League and West Championship campaigns which have seen us qualify for both finals in recent weeks and will be hoping to get off to a winning start and progress to the knockout stages of the championship for the first time since 2019. The restructured 2020 and 2021 County Championship campaigns didn’t go according to plan, with only two groups’ games there was little room for error and unfortunately during the past two campaigns we have found ourselves in the dreaded relegation play-off. On both occasions the team showed great character to come away with the win and preserve our senior status. While the 2021 campaign was challenging due to sustaining several injuries it gave a lot of new younger players the opportunity to gain invaluable senior championship experience with no fewer than seven players gaining county championship exposure for the first time. With an array of underage talent coming through the ranks from the successful County Minor winning side from 2021 and coming into the senior panel this year many more younger players will hopefully get a taste of senior championship throughout the course of the summer. We have been drawn in a very competitive group two where we will be joined by fellow West Limerick sides Ballysteen and beaten county finalists Adare, south Limerick clubs Galtee Gaels and Ballylanders as well as Thursday nights opponents Kildimo/Pallaskenry. Kildimo/Pallaskenry will make the step up to the senior ranks following their excellent county intermediate championship success last season which has seen them achieve dual senior status which is an outstanding achievement. Both sides met in the opening round of the County League this year in Rhebogue and while we came away with a
comfortable victory on the night both sides were missing a few influential players including their county senior and u20 players. Both sides possess several influential members of the Limerick senior football panel who could have a major bearing on the outcome of Thursdays game, Darragh Treacy and Liam Kennedy will no doubt be to the fore of our aspirations while Kildimo will look to Peter Nash, Tony McCarthy, and Limerick senior hurler Darren O’ Connell to inspire them to victory. In advance of Thursday’s opening round game, we have had excellent preparation with three games against Ballysteen in the west championship semi-final and Galbally and Newcastlewest in the County League, losing by a goal to Newcastlewest last week in the County League final. Both sides will undoubtedly go into Thursday night’s game full of confidence that they can get their championship campaign off to a winning start. Kildimo/Pallaskenry will want to make a statement in the first game at senior level while we will want to get our first win in the group stages since 2019 when we qualified for the County Semi-Final. Thursday’s game throws in at 7pm in the Bog Garden, Rathkeale. Tickets will have to be purchased online in advance as cash will not be taken on the gate. Your support is greatly appreciated by the players and management.
Minor Hurling / Football:
Our minors get their county championship campaigns underway this week. Following on from a very successful 2021 season which saw both teams contest county finals, winning the minor A football championship. In minor hurling we once again contest the Minor ‘B’ Championship and have been paired alongside east Limerick clubs Caherline and Pallasgreen. In the opening round we played Caherline on Tuesday evening, we will have a result and match report in next weeks edition before welcoming Pallasgreen to Coolcappagh on Friday evening for round 2. The minor footballers make the step up to Premier level in 2022 and have been drawn in group 2 with Monaleen and Fr. Casey’s. We travel to Castletroy this coming Monday evening for round 1 against Monaleen where victory is vital if we aspire to progression to the knockout stages of the championship. Friday evenings game against Pallasgreen throws in at 7.30 in Coolcappagh.
