South Liberties GAA Club Notes:
Junior B League County Final Winners:
All roads led to Killmallock last Friday evening for our eagerly awaited Junior B hurling league county final where we faced the current league holders Granagh/Ballingarry who were unbeaten all season.
With regular goalkeeper Ben Garry unavailable up stepped the evergreen Paul Butler and he duly showed his class producing some great saves during the game. Playing against the breeze in the first half we opened the scoring with a pointed free from David O Neill which was quickly followed by a point from Granagh Ballingarry. With both sides cancelling each other out, scores were at a premium with both defenses on top. By the 20 minute the sides were tied at 0-5 apiece our scores coming from Ben Compton,Barry Walsh, David O Neill and Joe Hegarty. A move started in defence saw the ball played through the lines and Shane O Neill firing an unstoppable shot to the net for a quality goal. This was followed by two more points from Ben Compton and Brian Garry to put some daylight between the sides as we went in at whistle, leading on a score line of 1-7 to 0-6.
The second half began with Granagh/Ballingarry on the front foot and they soon had our lead reduced to a single point within 10 minutes of the restart. Shane O Neill scored our first point of the second half. We were starting to get on top at this stage but some wayward shooting saw us miss a number of score-able chances. However, Granagh/Ballingarry were unable to punish our poor shooting and two pointed frees from Barry Walsh saw us increase our lead again to three points. Two more Batty Walsh points in the final 10 minutes saw us take the title on a score line of 1-12 to 0-13.
Despite missing four of our normal back six players through injury our defence on the night were immense standing up to everything that was thrown at them and it was great to see Mike O Brien and Eoghan Godfrey back on the playing field after lengthy injury breaks. Our midfield worked tirelessly putting in a great shift and although things didn’t work out as planned for our forwards, we were able to pick of scores at vital times to keep us in front.
Thanks to Kilmallock for the use of the pitch which was in great shape and to referee David Deady and his umpires on a job well done. Captain David O Neill accepted the cup from our own JP McManus which was a tremendous finish to the evening.
