South Liberties GAA Club Notes:
2024 10th Anniversary South Liberties Golf Classic:
On the 10th anniversary of our #legendsgolfclassic, which took place last Friday June 21st, we can reflect very proudly on yet another successful event. John Leamy, the main orchestrator, left no stone unturned. The day began with grey skies followed by a few hours of rain but eventually the greens dried up and the sun shone, to conclude the golf side of events. Our Prize winners on the day were :
1st team Eoin Kirby, 2nd team Bio Science 2, 3rd team Sean Scanlon and 4th team Limerick Tutorial
Following this…
John Leamy has been the nucleus of our #legendsgolfclassic for the last 10 years, commanding a brilliant backroom team. We had to honour John yesterday for his trojan work, so Chairman John Godfrey and Treasurer Maurice Barrett presented John with a framed caricature, depicting various stages and parts of his life. John’s wife Gertrude as always is a frontal greet for all participants and his children Jessica Stephanie and Ben his family support. Well done John Leamy and thank you!
The classic attracts sporting legends from all over Ireland each year. On this particular occasion we had an auction for a signed rugby ball and some framed historic photos of our history, marking 140 years since our club’s formation. Golden man Johnny Luby had everyone hysterically laughing before he became our auctioneer for the night, with Elvis finishing off the entertainment. We wish to thank as always, our main sponsors, Bio Science Nutrition Ireland, BDO, Great National South Court Hotel, The Beacon Limerick and STL Logistics. Thanks also to all our tee box sponsors, Ballyneety Golf Club and Vines Grill & Wine bar. We must also mention our background organising committee and volunteers and especially all the girls selling tickets for our amazing raffle prizes. The Kerry Footballer Jimmy Deenihan brought his Dads hurley for us to see as it is 100 years old and Galway Legend Peter Murphy presented a cheque of €6,000 to Brendan Ring for the Cliona’s Foundation. Our Charity partner for 2024 is the Haematology / Oncology Day Unit at UHL. Donations can still be made if people wish to do so on a BIO link on Instagram, click into our Facebook page or contact any committee member. A huge thanks also to the Mc Manus’s for their fantastic support each and every year.
The Mikey Butler U10 Memorial Tournament 2024:
The Mikey Butler tournament was held last Saturday in Dooley Park. It was great to see this event back in motion in memory of the great Mikey Butler who was a stalwart with the Souths back in the 70’s. Bruff GAA won the Cup, with South Liberties winning the shield. Many thanks to Brian Foley and his team for organising and Angela Butler for making the presentations. Also, thanks to Bruff GAA, Hospital/Herbertstown GAA and Cappawhite GAA for participating. Also credit to Elm Court Service Station, Ballyneety for sponsoring goody bags for over 100 kids on the day. A wonderful morning was had by all.
Junior Hurlers:
Our junior hurlers played the County Junior B hurling league semifinal last Saturday where they faced the south league winners Staker Wallace.
We started slowly and allowed Stakers into a 4 points to 1 lead within five minutes of the start. David O Neill with our point from a 65.
As we settled into the game, points from Brian Garry, Ben Compton and David O Neill and two quick fire goals from Brian Garry and Brendan Aherne saw us build up a lead of five points by the twenty minutes mark. We continued to push on for the remainder of the half with David O Neill getting in for our third goal and points from Shane O Neill, Joe Hegarty, Brian Garry and David O Neill saw us lead 3-10 to 0-9 at halftime.
Stakers came out fighting at the start of the second half and opened the scoring with a goal following a goal mouth scramble but from the resulting puck out Brian Garry got on the end of a good move to score his second and our fourth goal. Both sides traded scores as the second half progressed and we were able to keep ahead of Stakers with points from Barry Walsh, Ben Compton, Joe Hegarty, Sean Keane, and David O Neill seeing us win out on a score line of 4-18 to 2-13.

Denis O Sullivan:
The Club would like to wish the Captain from our 1978 Senior County Final hurling winning team, Denis O Sullivan, and his wife Catherine, a very happy 50th wedding anniversary this week. Denis golfed in our legends classic last Friday but had to leave early to welcome home his family from abroad to join them in their celebrations. Congratulations Denis and Catherine!
