Ulster University recovered from a shaky start to earn a 1-13 to 1-10 over holders UCC.
Trailing by five points in the opening half, Ulster University responded in determined fashion.
An early Seánie O’Connor goal helped UCC into a 1-5 to 0-3 advantage, but Danny Fullerton replied with a fine major for Ulster University.
Conor Cush was an influential figure for Ulster University, who gleaned an encouraging first round triumph.
In the west UCD dominated throughout against ATU Galway emerging 1-22 to 1-5 winners.
David Garland, Diarmuid Moriarty, and Daire Cregg scored heavily for UCD, who last triumphed in 2018.
UCD took control early, accumulating a 0-13 to 0-3 half-time lead.
Barry McNulty added a goal for UCD after the restart with Eoin Mannion supplying ATU Galway’s major.
Jack Torpey’s late goal proved to be thde decisive score as TUS Midlands edged out SETU Carlow 3-11 to 2-13.
Colm Hulton and Oisín McGraynor scored SETU Carlow’s goals with Sligo’s Luke Marren efficient for TUS Midlands.
Mark Gibbons, Matthew Whittaker, and Torpey rattled the SETU Carlow net during an entertaining encounter.
UL cruised to an emphatic 3-12 to 0-8 win over ATU Donegal at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence.
Ahead 1-8 to 0-3 at the break, UL, beaten finalists last year, were similarly effective in the second half.
Daniel Walsh, Ciaran Downes, and Gearoid Hassett scored UL’s goals.
