PATRICKSWELL GAA CLUB NOTES

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell made a winning start in the Senior Hurling Championship against Doon, despite the challenging conditions in Kilmallock.

The ‘Well played into a stiff breeze in the first half and Doon took advantage with the opening two points. Diarmaid Byrnes registered Patrickswell’s first point and this was quickly followed by points from Aaron Gillane and Paul O’Brien. After fifteen minutes, the scoreline was 0-3 to 0-2 to Ciaran Carey’s men. Doon rallied with two consecutive points, but Diarmaid Byrnes cancelled out this recovery with two points in response. Once again the East Men equalised; however Aaron Gillane was on hand to nudge Patrickswell back into the lead at 0-6 to 0-5. At the end of the first half, Doon scored twice to go ahead by 0-7 to 0-6. Diarmaid Byrnes registered the final point of the first half to ensure that the teams were level at 0-7 apiece. Patrickswell had coped with the strong breeze and were delighted to reach half-time at parity.

With the conditions now in our favour, the ‘Well took full advantage at the beginning of the second half. Jason Gillane’s point was immediately followed by John Flynn’s goal after a determined solo run. Aaron Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes struck more points to put Patrickswell ahead by 1-10 to 0-7. While Doon scored a point, Cian Lynch responded immediately. The middle of the second half saw Doon reduced to thirteen men after two red cards were issued. Our opponents scored another two points, but Jack Kelleher and Mark Carmody notched their first points to ensure a 1-13 to 0-10 triumph.

On Easter Sunday, the Senior hurlers return to Kilmallock to play Na Piarsaigh at 2pm.
