Junior C Football:
The Junior C footballers were edged out by Athea in the Championship semi-final. Patrickswell dominated the first fifteen minutes with the breeze at our backs and we were rewarded with points from Peter Harty, David Woulfe and Briain Og O’Sullivan. Athea hit back with two points, but Peter Harty struck a fisted goal on the 20 minute mark. David Woulfe and Jack McNamara’s points were then cancelled out by Athea. The half-time score was 1-5 to 0-4 in our favour.
The second half was difficult for Patrickswell against the breeze. Athea notched three straight points before Jason Gillane and Peter Harty restored a 1-7 to 0-8 lead by the 50th minute. Patrickswell were undone by an Athea goal that put our opponents ahead for the first time. With ten minutes remaining, we sought an equalising point that never came. In the 60th minute, Athea scored another point to build a 1-9 to 1-7 lead. Paul O’Brien’s late late free kick was heading for the top corner before Athea’s massed defence cleared the danger. Hard luck to the players and management. It was an excellent return to gaelic football for the club.
