PATRICKSWELL GAA CLUB NOTES
SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers were narrowly defeated in the opening pool match of the County Championship by Doon. Despite the early dismissal of Kevin O’Brien, the ‘Well raced into a four-point lead within three minutes. Calvin Carroll opened the scoring with a point, which was followed up by Jason Gillane, Aaron Gillane and Cian Lynch. Doon settled into the contest and they responded with a flurry of six consecutive points in four minutes. Aaron Gillane’s point stemmed the tide, but the East Men notched another two points to establish a 0-8 to 0-5 lead in the 13th minute. Patrickswell equalised at 0-8 apiece by the first half water break when Diarmaid Byrnes (0-2) and Mark Carmody added to the Patrickswell tally. After the water break, the ‘Well continued on the offensive and Diarmaid Byrnes, Aaron Gillane and Nigel Foley produced fine points to open a 0-11 to 0-8 margin by the 22nd minute. However, Doon dominated the late stages of the first half and scored four points in contrast to Diarmaid Byrnes’ point. The half-time score was 0-12 apiece.
In the opening moments of the second half, Doon were also reduced to 14 men. Diarmaid Byrnes and Cian Lynch added points that offset a pair of Doon points. The next ten minutes were damaging for Patrickswell as our opponents registered seven points without reply. There were thirteen minutes of normal time left and Doon were 0-21 to 0-14 ahead. Diarmaid Byrnes and John Kirby broke the Doon momentum with fresh points, but two points restored the seven-point deficit. The game reached an exciting conclusion when Patrickswell slashed the deficit to four points when Aaron Gillane, John Kirby and Diarmaid Byrnes claimed a string of points. There were three minutes left on the clock and the deficit was just 0-23 to 0-19. Doon kept Patrickswell at arm’s length when Seanie O’Brien and Aaron Gillane points were cancelled out. Diarmaid Byrnes brought the ‘Well within a goal as Paudie Maher was dismissed in the 63rd minute with scoreboard displaying 0-25 to 0-22. Aaron Gillane had another point sandwiched around a brace of Doon points. Seven minutes of injury time had elapsed and the ‘Well trailed by 0-27 to 0-23. There was sufficient time for Cian Lynch to plunder a late goal, but the whistle blew immediately and the comeback was frustrated. The final score was a 1-23 to 0-27 defeat. The second pool match is against Ahane on Sunday September 12 at 4.45pm at the Gaelic Grounds.
JUNIOR A HURLERS: In the first match of the Junior A County Championship, Patrickswell faced Mungret in Clarina. Mungret scored the first point of the match before Jonathan McMahon responded in the fifth minute. Mungret pushed ahead with two points but Peter Harty delivered an excellent finish to score Patrickswell’s first goal and he immediately added another point. Mungret’s fourth point ensured a water break score of 1-2 to 0-4 for Patrickswell. While Mungret equalised shortly after the water break, they were pushed back by two Sam McNamara points and a clever goal where Gavin Carey jumped highest to flick the sliotar into the net. Patrickswell were 2-4 to 0-5 ahead in the 22nd minute. To their credit, Mungret edged back into the match with four unanswered points in six minutes. Peter Harty added the last point of the first half to cement a 2-5 to 0-9 interval lead for the ‘Well.
Mungret produced two points at the start of the second half, however Eoin Harmon and Peter Harty were on hand to cancel them out. Almost immediately, Mungret claimed three points in three minutes to edge into a 0-14 to 2-7 lead. Peter Harty equalised with a free, but Mungret managed to add another trio of points. There were fifteen minutes on the clock and our opponents were 0-17 to 2-8 ahead. Two more points from Peter Harty slashed the deficit to a single point with eight minutes left. Mungret retained their composure and their brace of points allowed them a one-goal advantage at 0-19 to 2-10 ahead with six minutes left. While there was ample time remaining, Pater Harty’s free point was the last score of the match. Mungret triumphed on a scoreline of 0-19 to 2-11.
UNDER 17 HURLERS: The Under 17 Hurling team had another win in the championship against Claughaun. This qualifies the team for a County quarter-final. The Well were nine points up at half-time and hurling strongly, but a few injuries allied to an early second half goal gave Claughaun momentum. A second Claughaun goal near the finish brought the advantage down to two points but Patrickswell held out for a good win with excellent late scores from John Murray and Billy Earls, with Liam Fitzgerald unerring with the frees. The final score was 1-15 to 2-10. The team was Josh Mulcahy, Paddy McGrath, John Murray, Conor O’Brien, Ross Ferguson, Billy Earls, Ryan Kennedy, Harry McDonagh, Christy Carroll, Liam Fitzgerald, Leon Kinsella, James Fitzgerald, Hugh Maher, Paddy Gardiner and Dale McDonagh. The substitutes that played were Cathal Fitzgerald and Jack Foley.
CLUB LOTTO: The Club Lotto draw on Monday August 30 was not won. The numbers drawn were 16, 20, 21 and 29. The bonus number was 31. The €100 Lucky Dip was won by David Hannan and the €20 prizes were claimed by Aine O’Connor, Mary Gillane, Rory Bennis, Mike McNamara and Caitriona Flanagan. This week’s jackpot is €7,800.
