PATRICKKSWELL GAA CLUB NOTES
UNDER 21 HURLERS: Patrickswell experienced a difficult week in the Premier Hurling Championship with two defeats in 48 hours against Mungret and Garryspillane. In the match against Mungret, Jason Gillane gave the ‘Well a perfect start with three points in the opening two minutes. Mungret’s first point was immediately countered by Jason Gillane and Patrickswell were 0-4 to 0-1 ahead within five minutes. Mungret began to edge into the match and produced two quick-fire points to reduce the deficit to a single point. When Patrick Kirby increased the advantage, our opponents responded with another brace of points to equalise at 0-5 apiece. Jason Gillane and Calvin Carroll were called upon to build a 0-7 to 0-5 advantage at the water break. After the game recommenced, Mungret hit Patrickswell with four unanswered points in six minutes. While in arrears of 0-9 to 0-7, Jason Gillane scored in the 25th minute and trimmed the deficit to the minimum. Mungret rallied with another two points in sixty seconds, but Jason Gillane’s free point steadied the nerves. The final point of the first half was scored by Mungret and Patrickswell reached the interval at 0-12 to 0-9 behind.
In the initial five minutes of the second half, Jason Gillane had another free point cancelled out straight away. Moments later, Patrick Kirby’s sideline cut was met at the back post by the on-rushing Cian Gorman. He beat the goalkeeper from close range and equalised at 1-10 to 0-13. Mungret were unfazed and retaliated with two points, before Patrick Kirby’s point before the water break reduced the deficit to 0-15 to 1-11. There was a slowdown in scoring after the restart, but Patrickswell seemed on course for victory with a flurry of three points in four minutes from Jason Gillane (0-2) and John Kirby. The clock had six minutes left and the ‘Well were 1-14 to 0-15 ahead. Unfortunately, Mungret finished strongly with a salvo of three points and emerged as narrow 0-18 to 1-14 winners.
Two days later, Patrickswell met Garryspillane in Caherdavin. In a remarkable first half, Patrickswell dominated the Bouncers and were rewarded with seven points before the water break. The scorers were Patrick Kirby, Josh Considine (0-2), Jason Gillane (0-3) and Calvin Carroll. After the water break, Jason Gillane’s double free points and Josh Considine’s point from play built an incredible 0-10 to 0-0 lead. While Garryspillane looked demoralised, they scraped one goal and a point just before half-time to establish a foothold in the match. The interval score was 0-10 to 1-1 to Patrickswell.
Jason Gillane’s free point withing moments of the whistle created a seven-point lead, but two points from Garryspillane trimmed the lead to five points by the 35th minute. Patrick Kirby’s point turned out to be Patrickswell’s final score of the match. Despite being 0-12 to 1-3 ahead, Garryspillane pounded the ‘Well with six unanswered points in a damaging ten minutes. As the teams huddled for the water break, the scoreline was level at 0-12 to 1-9. Regrettably, the wind was in Garyspillane’s sails and they scored three points in six minutes to move ahead by 1-12 to 0-12. Patrickswell were committed to an equalising goal, but they were sunk by a second Bouncer goal to lose out by 2-12 to 0-12. On Tuesday November 16, Patrickswell must beat Croagh Kilfinny Rathkeale at 8pm in Staker Wallace.
CLUB LOTTO: The Club Lotto draw on Monday November 8 was not won. The numbers drawn were 5, 12, 27 and 31. The bonus number was 1. The €100 Lucky Dip was won by Mary McKinley and the €20 prizes were claimed by Elaine O’Reilly, Michael Guerin, Lily Lynch, Cillian Murphy and Padraig Punch. This week’s jackpot is €9,800.
