Co JB Football Championship Final:
Hard luck to the Knockane JB footballers who suffered a heartbreaking county final defeat in Kilbreedy last Saturday afternoon. Seeking their first adult county title since 1942, this will be remembered as one that got away. Played in cold, drizzly conditions, the underfoot surface held up remarkably well, allowing both sides to serve up a gripping contest. The Sarsfields men were gallant throughout, responding time and again to adversity and never allowing Knockainey to pull clear. Knockainey, playing with the aid of the elements, started the brighter and looked dangerous early on. But Knockane gradually found their rhythm, closing the gap to just three points by half time, trailing 0-5 to 0-3. The second half was a welter of excitement and tension as both sides battled fiercely for that elusive county title. Knockane, growing in confidence, took command and drew level as the clock ticked down. They pressed forward in search of the winner, but despite sustained pressure, could not find the crucial score, sending the game to extra time. Once again, Knockainey began strongly, striking for a goal and adding two points to move five clear. It looked like game over, but Knockane, true to their spirit and determination, refused to yield. Points from Trevor Cosgrave and a superbly taken Vinny Ryan penalty brought them level once more, sending the match into fever pitch as both sets of supporters roared their teams on. However, in the dying moments, two key moments decided the contest. As Knockane surged forward seeking the winner, Knockainey turned over possession, broke swiftly, and were awarded a decisive free , which they duly converted. It proved the match-winning score, as Knockainey claimed the title on a 2-9 to 1-11 scoreline. It was a cruel outcome for Knockane, who gave everything and played a huge part in a wonderful, thrilling final. Though the result went against them, the players and supporters can hold their heads high ,  proud of their efforts, proud of their club, and proud of how close they came to ending a long wait for county glory.
