EAST GAELS AWARDS: Congratulations to Pakie Deere who was awarded an East Limerick Gaels Award in the Millennium Centre Caherconlish last Friday night to a capacity audience. Too often we take for granted the enormous voluntary effort of club members but for Pakie his contribution has been unselfish and crucial to the day to day running of the club. As long we have dedicated people like Pakie in the club we can be assured it’s in great hands. Congratulations on a well deserved honour. The following is the citation from the Awards Booklet:
To say Pakie Deere was a Pallasgreen club man through & through, would be an understatement. Having grown up straight across from Pallasgreen hurling field in Marian Terrace, He couldn’t have been closer to the club if he tried. Pakie’s loves for the GAA grew from an early age having played hurling for Pallasgreen up to U21’s. He continued to support his club as a selector for Pallasgreen and also his County as selector with the Limerick Intermediate team. Pakie then went on to be Chairman of Pallasgreen club for many years. Pakie could always be found at the side of the pitch in one role or another with his 2 partners in crime Christy Mc Mahon & Kieran Daly. The original match pundits of their day. Their lengthy post-match reviews often taking them for a few lemonades in the local. Pakie is well known for having done every gate in the county at some stage, often recruiting his daughter Aileen & nieces to dig him out of a hole when stuck on a Saturday afternoon. Still working with the County board & Munster council to this day. Pakie oftens makes an appearance on our screens in the Sunday Game. As he can be found in his best shirt & tie of a Sunday in the Gaelic grounds escorting the GAA elite to their seats. Like every great success story there is always a supportive back-room team and Pakie’s is no different. Breda, His wife of over 45 years is still making sandwiches & packing lunches for matches long after Pakie has hung up the boots. He has instilled his love for club & county in his three children Aileen, Jonathan & David. All three played for their club coached & guided by their supportive parents. Having also been involved in Feile & County throughout the years. Pakie was rarely seen at match without 1 or 3 in toe. In more recent years Pakie can be found proudly supporting his three grandchildren Noah, Molly & Lorcan who have all carried on the family tradition playing hurling, camogie & football. Instead of slowing down Pakie’s involvement in the club has only built momentum. There isn’t a wall in the clubhouse or fence in the field that hasn’t had the once over by Pakie. If there’s a job needs doing Pakie is the first man there & the last to leave. He has some tool or contraption somewhere to get the job done. Still a committed and active member on the Pallasgreen GAA committee, Pakie’s dedication to his club remains unwaivered. Pakie’s contribution to club & county over the years is a testament to his outstanding character. Something both his family & club are very proud of. He symbolises the community spirit of the GAA and represents the traditions that have been carried down from previous generations & instilled in our younger club members.
