Limerick hurlers made the journey to Pearse Stadium Salthill on Sunday 11th. March to play the home side in the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B, Round 5 game as part of a Double Header with an Allianz Football League game Galway v Monaghan the curtain raiser. Both sides were undefeated in their previous four outings, with wins over Offaly, Dublin, Laois and Antrim. Galway had the upper hand in their three most recent League clashes, all incidentally played in the Gaelic Grounds. In 2014 Galway scored a 1.20 to 1.12 win, and in 2017 the sides met twice in the League, Galway scored a 0.24 to 1.18 win in the Round Robin game and they repeated the dose a few weeks later when the sides met in the National League Semi Final winning by 1.21 to 1.11.
In front of a crowd of 9,728, eight agonising years came to an end when Limerick scored a well earned win by 2.18 to 1.19 to gain promotion from Division 1B of the National League. Limerick played against a stiff breeze and were blitzed in the early stages when Galway registered 1.03 to take an early commanding lead, Limerick got more into the game as it progressed, but it was the home side that led at the interval by 1.15 to 1.08, the late stages of the opening half saw a number of scuffles break out and four yellow cards recorded. The second saw Limerick come on top outscoring the opponents by 1.10 to 0.04 to secure a two point win and promotion.
