NEWCASTLEWEST GAA CLUB NOTES
“A DATE WITH AUSTIN STACKS”
Last Saturday was indeed a very proud day for all of us involved with Newcastle West GAA Club. We have had lots of historic and memorable days of which, last Saturday ranked right up there with the best of them. We are so proud of our boys/men and their efforts, which rightly saw them win the Munster Senior club Football quarter final earning them a place in the semi final versus Austin Stacks Tralee.
The inclement weather especially the hail shower just before 10 am, didn’t help the underfoot conditions. A minutes silence was observed before the game as a mark of respect for the late Mons Liam Boyle former PP of Newcastle West, the late Tom McGarry Claughaun (who was a regular at our gate for many a match) and the late Pat Ranahan Ballysteen, may they rest in peace. However despite the weather and conditions, the game itself was tough, it took our lads the 1st quarter to get up to the pace (as we hadn’t played in 5 weeks) the score at that point was Newcastle West 0-1 NireFourmilewater 0-3, after the 1st half water break with the lads now at the pace of the game it was even-steven at 4 points a piece. The players took to the field for the 2nd half, by the 2nd half water break we were ahead by a point (7 points to 6 points), about 5 mins into the last quarter we lost Seamus Hurley to a serious injury, the players from both sides went into huddles whilst Seamus was attended to. There was 9 minutes of injury which saw us run out winners 8 points to 6 points at the final whistle. We would like to congratulate all involved, the players, management team and the medics.
A huge thank you to all who helped the day run so smoothly, all the stewards, those who ran the shop, making teas coffees etc. Great credit must go to Neilus Sheehy, Sean Roche and Liam Sexton who had the pitch in great shape so we could host the game in our own home patch.
Wishing Seamus Hurley a speedy recovery following his injury, hopefully he will be back on the playing pitch sooner rather than later.
All in all a great historic day for Newcastle West GAA.
