U15 Féile Review
The U15 panel participated in GAA Féile competitions over the last two weekends. On the back of an impressive performance in the Division 2 Championship Semi Final over Belville Gaels the hurlers were confident of a good run in Féile Iomaint that took place on Friday and Saturday August 20/21. We progressed from our group with two wins from two. We had a very physical opening match against hosts Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan who gave us a bit of as scare as it wasn’t until midway in the second half that we took the lead and pulled away to win 1-7 to 0-5. Our final group match against Dromin/Athlaca/Banogue was very one sided and allowed us to give all our subs a run out with NCW impressively winning 3-13 to 0-1 despite the monsoon conditions. Having won our group we were heading to Ballybrown early on Saturday morning to take on Knockainey in the Quarter Final. After a slow start we found ourselves 5 points down with a good bit of work to do, with the Féile matches only 15 minutes each half. Newcastle West fought back well and earned their 3-8 to 2-6 win in another very physical battle. We were back on the road heading for Old Christians GAA Club in Rathbane for our Semi Final against Mungret. Another slow start saw us five or six points down before we registered a score. Again the young Magpies refused to lie down and dug deep to leave us 2 points down at half time. Mungret extended their lead in the second half but again the Newcastle West boys came back at them getting closer all the time to tipping the balance. Mungret were under severe pressure in the last few minutes but we just couldn’t strike the killer blow. In the end we lost by 2 points, 3-7 to 2-8, but will learn a lot from Féile Iomaint 2021.
Our Féile Peil group was also hosted by Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan with all of our matches played at Ballysteen on Friday (Aug 27) evening and Saturday (28th) morning. We had two comprehensive wins on Friday 6-3 to 2-7 and 5-3 to 1-7 over hosts Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan and Monagea respectively. The lads played very well dominating in both matches in very different conditions to the previous weekend with the country soaked in glorious sunshine. Heading home that evening all players saw a good amount of game time and were rightly very satisifed with two wins from two. We were back in Ballysteen early the following morning to play Drom Broadford. Drom had a win and a loss from their opening matches the previous day and knew they had to win and then by a signiificant amount to overtake us as group winners. Unfortunately, this is what happened in Drom’s ‘Miracle Match’ winning 6-4 to 3-1 just edging us out on points difference to progress to the Quarter Finals.
Thanks to our host club Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan who were very welcoming on both weekends and had their pitches in great shape for hurling and football. Thanks to all the players on the U15 Panel for representing your club in Féile and competing at a very high standard. We couldn’t be any prouder of your efforts over the last two weekends. Thanks to coaches Darren, Patrick, Roger, Jonathan, Stephen and Aaron for their tireless efforts in preparing the teams for Féile. Thanks also to our U15 parents for taking time off work and family commitments to taxi the boys to the venues and for your support and encouragement.

Primary Schools Coaching
This ongoing and help is always needed, so if you have an hour or so to spare and love the football and hurling, opportunity knocks! If you are interested, please contact childrensofficer.newcastlewest.limerick@gaa.ie for further details.
Spare Gear
If you have any small hurleys and helmets which are no longer needed they’d be very welcome by those coaching younger age groups in the club and schools. Just drop them to any training session or committee member and they will be added to stock and be available to the learners especially in schools where young players who are introduced to GAA may not have their own gear. Many of those who are introduced to the game in schools do not join the club!
