U13 Football Division 3A Round 1
Newcastle West……………………. 3-3
Monagea ……………………………… 4-4
Our U13 panel welcomed old rivals, Monagea, for our Round 1 fixture last Thursday evening (July 1st). Over the years this Monagea side have proven very strong opponents for us so we were in no doubt the challenge that awaited and were well prepared. Our Captain at centre forward, Rory Vaughan, won the toss and chose to play into the town goal. NCW started well and had a clear penalty turned down for a foot trip on Rory Vaughan as he was taking a shot on goal. The referee wasn’t interested and Mongaea cleared the ball upfield for a well worked goal and soon followed up with a point. NCW got right back into the match levelling up at 1-1 each after a point from Rory Vaughan (a free) and a wonderful effort with the ball worked well in by our half forward line (Tiernan Horgan and Rory) up to Declan O’Grady at Full Forward who layed off to the on running Evan Crowley at Corner Forward. Evan took the ball on well to draw the defence and unselfishly popped a super pass to the unmarked Sean Fitzgerald to take his goal. Monagea scored a point to leave it 1-1 to 1-2 at the first half water break. Both sides added a point to leave it 1-2 to 1-3 at halftime with the NCW score coming from a free from Rory Vaughan. In the final play of the half NCW were unlucky not to take the lead with Evan Crowley again with a brilliant run up the left finding Declan O’Grady who shot narrowly wide. Monagea won possession on the restart and scored a goal from a blistering attack. Just as they had in the first half, our young Magpies responded with 1-1 to level the match. A goal made by an electric run from midfielder Tristan Kirwan linking up with Sean Fitz at half forward who played an inch perfect pass to Declan O’Grady taking a well placed shot to the back of the net. NCW captain Rory Vaughan with his third point of the match (again from a free) saw the sides level at 2-3 each. Monagea blitzed NCW to finish with 2 goals and a point to go ahead 2-3 to 4-4 as the referee called for the second half water break. The final score of the match came from the hardworking Tristan Kirwan who set off on a trademark run passing several Monagea defenders before putting the ball in the net. NCW were unlucky again not to add to the scoreline with Tiernan Horgan and Declan O’Grady coming desperately close with goal chances. As the final whistle blew the Newcastle West men had given their all and you cannot ask for more than that. Other notable mentions to Kian O’Keeffe in midfield keeping the Monagea ‘danger man’ quiet, Aaron Mullenger at corner back who disrupted several Monagea attacks winning back possession for his team, and our half back line Jack Horgan, Diarmuid Cremin and Darragh O’Keeffe who unselfishly ran themselves into the ground. Its back to the training ground to fine tune a few things as we are in no doubt if we meet Monagea later in the season we’ll give them another right good rattle.
U13 Panel: Aaron Mullenger, Charlie Moore, Cillian Shanahan, Darragh Liston, Darragh O’Keeffe, Declan O’Grady, Diarmuid Cremin, Evan Crowley, Jack Horgan, James Douglas Normoyle, Josh Glasper, Kian O’Keeffe, Ksawier Bochnak, Leon O’Flynn, Luke Scanlon, Mark Cussen, Matthew Walshe, Mark Healy, Max Normoyle, Rory Vaughan, Sean Fitzgerald, Shay Collins, Thomas Hanley, Tiernan Horgan, Tristan Kirwan

Primary Schools Coaching
This ongoing and help is always needed, so if you have an hour or so to spare and love the football and hurling, opportunity knocks! If you are interested, please contact childrensofficer.newcastlewest.limerick@gaa.ie for further details.
Spare Gear
If you have any small hurleys and helmets which are no longer needed they’d be very welcome by those coaching younger age groups in the club and schools. Just drop them to any training session or committee member and they will be added to stock and be available to the learners especially in schools where young players who are introduced to GAA may not have their own gear. Many of those who are introduced to the game in schools do not join the club!
