County Premier U19 Football Final
Newcastle West 1-10
Fr. Casey’s 1-08
Scenic Athea was the venue for this highly anticipated clash between great local rivals NCW and Fr. Casey/s last Tuesday evening. The game didn’t disappoint. Two evenly matched teams went toe to toe until referee Mike Browne called time and we emerged victorious when the clock stopped.
The game started at a hectic pace, but scores were hard to come by. NCW dominated possession but a very well organised Fr Casey’s defence meant we found it hard to break through the centre of the pitch. We seemed to get the most joy when we kick passed long and direct to the inside runners. An incisive run by Con Hayes led to a free which was quickly taken by Oisin Collins to Sean Geraghty who skilfully scored our opening point.
However, Caseys quickly moved the ball up the pitch to equalise. The rest of the half was intense and hard, and most scores came from frees two from Oisin Collins and two more from Emmet Rigter and the score at the break was five points apiece.
Coaches Declan Brouder and James Kelly laid it on the line at half time what would be required to win and in fairness to the boys they responded. We upped the intensity further in the second half but to be fair to Abbeyfeale so did they. Another free from Oisin and a great score from play from Emmet had us going well but then Fr Caseys got a great goal from a turnover to put them two ahead and in the driving, seat heading into the final quarter.
However, the boys showed why they have been county champions on four previous occasions in this final quarter. The introduction of a few subs seemed to have the desired effect- Cathal Hayes received a 40-meter pass from Diarmuid Lyons and when Cathal won a free, he quickly took it and dinked the ball over two Caseys defenders to the onrushing Diarmuid Lyons who had continued his run up the field to beautifully finish to the corner.
It was the decisive score of the game. We were ahead by one now and added two more to score 1-3 without reply and leave us up three points. Caseys fought valiantly to the end and an attempted shot was tipped over for a point. On the subsequent kick out the referee called time and we were champions sparking great scenes of celebration.
All in all, it was a most enjoyable U19 campaign for the footballers. This is a fifth premier county title for this age group, they have won the U13 and U14 football previously to add to this U19 success. They have also won an U15 and U16 premier hurling. They have won both amazingly with the same bunch of players which is a credit to themselves and the club and a testament to the respect they have for each other. Their team spirit is inspirational, and we now hope they carry these qualities though to their adult lives on and off the pitch.
Ashton Neville is only u 16 but loyally played in the goals when we were struggling to get a goalie. His performance on the night belied his age. Patrick Noonan and Kieran O Connell were excellent corner backs both making huge defensive plays when the need was great. John Whelan ably battled with Casey’s key inside Forward Ronan Quirke and led the inside line. Ronan O Sullivan did very well at wing back while Arron Neville and Diarmuid Lyons would both be in the conversation for man of the match along with Emmet Rigter and Con Hayes. Sean Torley was immense in midfield alongside Emmet. Half forward line of Andrew Lyons Sean Geraghty and Con did trojan work. The corner forwards of James Lyons and Arron Mullane worker hard while our captain Oisin Collins was very impressive with great running and some fantastic crucial frees.
Our subs made a big contribution John O Grady came on at half time and put in a huge shift. Cathal Hayes was involved in contributing to the final 1-2 when he came on and Reece Daly added power and hard running in the middle third when introduced. Many thanks to the U16s of Jack Gallagher and Darragh Tierney and to Jack Gleeson who all made contributions during the year.
Final thanks to the Management team of Roger Hayes, Declan Brouder, James Kelly and Eoin Hurley for all their efforts during the year.

Claughaun 0-05
NCW took on Claughaun in Round 3 on a dry but windy day in Askeaton on Sunday afternoon last. The first 15 minutes was cagey for both teams with Thomas Quilligan and Eoin Hurley (2 frees) getting NCW off the mark and scoreboard read 3pts-1pt in favour of NCW. Play opened a bit more in the remainder of the half with good inter passing moves orchestrated by James Kelly at centre back. Brian O’Sullivan got on end of 2 moves to finish the half with 2 excellent points from wing back position. Ht score 7-2 in favour of NCW.
NCW had the assistance of a strong breeze in the second half playing into the town end. Scores were hard to come by, but Eoin Hurley landed 2 points and Bryan Nix also added one to keep the scoreboard ticking along. In fairness to Claughaun they were well organised and difficult to break down. The constant running of Brian O’Sullivan allowed him to get on the end of a move to finish to the net for a great goal to close out the game with five minutes remaining.

Premier Junior Football R3 v Cappamore
Clarina was the venue last Thursday evening for our R3 Premier Junior Football game against Cappamore. We played against the breeze in the first half and started off brightly. We had the ball in the back of the net after two minutes with a great finish by Joey Healy after a slick passing move which started from our full back line. Further points are added by John Whelan and Niall McAuliffe (2) to put us in a commanding position. Our backs were tight as a defensive unit and dealt with anything that was thrown at them. Niall McAuliffe goaled on 20 minutes following an eight man passing move. The last point of the half was a well worked score from Lee Woulfe.
HT score NCW 2-4 Cappamore 3 pts
The pace in the second half dropped a little and both sides contained each other for the 30 minutes. NCW made changes and all five subs were used off the bench. We had points from Ben Finnegan, Oisin Collins (2) and Evan McMahon to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Overall, a strong performance with great effort and commitment shown by the panel. This was our first championship win of the season having already drawn two games with two remaining games left in the coming weeks.
